Fiona Roan is not only a pioneer of Taiwan’s film industry, but a representation of female creators in the modern age. In 2021, she became the first ever woman to win Best New Director Golden Horse Award for her debut feature, “American Girl”.
“I believe the truth is what’s most powerful,” she says, “when I make a movie, my biggest desire is to see different aspects of a woman being portrayed in honesty.” Following this belief, Fiona brings her personal experiences – her “truth” – into her creative process. From her graduation short film “Jiejie”, to the award-winning “American Girl”, both of which she wrote and directed, she wove delicately the essence of womanhood into stories that are both universally understood and special to every individual.
