The attraction to the AvD Oldtimer Grand Prix on the Nürgburgring is as strong as ever. In its 32nd year, 69,000 spectators witnessed an unparalleled 32-hour racing agenda. Roughly 600 historic race cars, distributed over 13 races, provided an atmosphere full of excitement and fascination. The roaring engines, the gripping battles for positions on the track and the hectic pit stops delighted young and old alike – there’s hardly any more intense and impressive way to bring the past of motor sport back to life.
An important role was of course played by the Porsche race cars, which have always been among the winners on all of the world’s race tracks, here on the Ring again displaying their full performance. But that was only one of the reasons why so many Porsche fans were attracted to this event. The Oldtimer Grand Prix has long since become one of the most favoured meeting places of the European Porsche Clubs, the Porsche Areal, highly esteemed for the comprehensive service it provides, having represented the central location for years now.
The VIP packages on offer from Porsche Classic, which included among other things entry tickets, a parking space for a Porsche vehicle on the grounds and admission to the hospitality tent with its familiar, excellent catering, "were already sold out very early on", said Klaus Boizo, After Sales Classic Manager. But travelling to the Mercedes Arena was also well worthwhile for those who hadn’t acquired a VIP package: inside, the whole world of Porsche spread out before the eye which could hardly take it all in at once. Diversity was the motto, reflected not only in the colours and model years of the roughly four hundred vehicles that had lined up according to type. More diversity was created by the Porsche partner companies such as Michelin, Bose, ElringKlinger and Koni who were also displaying their products and offering help and advice to anyone in need – just like the many departments of Porsche itself that were also present on the site. Porsche Classic employees answered any questions concerning spare parts and offered technical literature for sale, the Classic Center demonstrated the quality of a factory restoration using a Porsche Carrera RS 2.7 as an example, the so-called living workshop provided insights into the reproduction of spare parts and anyone interested in the Club topic could speak directly to the Club Service of the Porsche AG or Porsche Deutschland GmbH.
Also present were the departments Exclusive and Tequipment, the Porsche Driving School as well as the Travel Club and Selection was providing all those Porsche accessories that are in such hot demand. The Porsche appearance was successfully rounded off by interviews given several times a day and conducted by Susanne Francke of the Bayerischer Rundfunk who had informative and entertaining conversations with Porsche authors, technicians and tyre experts. In the face of such a mammoth agenda, the words spoken by Leonardo Benaton of the Porsche Club España who was at the OGP for the first time sound more than reasonable: "The amount of what’s on offer here is incredible."
