With the Porsche 911 GT3 R, Porsche customer teams all over the world race from one success to the next. Again last year the racer based on the 997 model generation racked up another victory at the Dubai 24 hour race.

Background

Each season, Porsche Motorsport has made ongoing improvements to the successful customer sport racer. Prior to the 2013 season, Porsche Motorsport significantly modified the aerodynamics of the body. The front end, the fenders all round, the sill covers, and the rear panels and the underbody underwent fine-tuning in the wind tunnel. The rear wing was enlarged to the width of the vehicle and re-positioned for optimal interaction with the redesigned body. The new aerodynamics improves downforce for higher cornering speeds and later braking points, while the wider track provides additional traction. The vehicle for 2014 and 2015 received no further modifications.

The track of the front axle was widened by 60 mm, with the rear axle track growing by 55 mm. The width of the front rims is now twelve instead of 10.9 inches. The wheelbase of the latest 911 GT3 R grew by 10 millimetres. The highly efficient four-litre six-cylinder flat engine has an output of approx. 368 kW (500 hp). The Porsche six-speed sequential dog-type gearbox with pneumatic shift system is operated via shift paddles on the steering wheel. This technical solution allows very fast and smooth gear changing – an advantage for higher operational reliability and greater durability.

Various electronic driver assistance systems adopted from the predecessor assist in achieving fast lap times and provide high driver safety. The E-gas features an automatic throttle-blip function. The gearbox electronics make the missing of gears and eventual over-revving virtually impossible. Thanks to a specially-adjusted traction control and a race ABS, the 911 GT3 R can be well controlled under braking and acceleration.

Many customers have converted older model years with an upgrade kit offered by Porsche. This kit is still available from Porsche Motorsport.
