“Perfection is not merely a matter of visuals”, as one Porsche advertisement put it as part of its campaign for the new 944 S. This strapline indicated that whilst the 944 S differed very little on the outside, beneath the surface, the differences were clearer. An additional cam, four-valve technology and additional modifications created a lively, highly compressed engine with superb thermal efficiency which output 190 bhp both with and without a catalytic converter. Environmentally friendly technology combined with sporty performance indicated that the 944 S slotted comfortably between the 944 and the 944 Turbo in terms of performance and price.
In the 1987 model year, the four-cylinder in-line engine which was expanded to include the 944 S enjoyed numerous improvements. The anti-lock braking system which was available as an optional extra required a number of chassis modifications to be made, such as a negative steering offset on the front axle and rims with a greater rim offset. Also on offer was a sports chassis, as well as a Clubsport package for the S and Turbo models. American customers were also offered an airbag system in their cars which also benefited passengers. These were fitted as standard to the Turbo or as optional extras in the 944 and 944 S. The four-cylinder range of models now came very close to fulfilling their motto: “something for everyone”.
