With his second win in a row, René Rast (Germany) keeps the race for the title in the Porsche Mobil 1 Supercup wider open. On the Nürburgring, he took a clear win in his Porsche 911 GT3 Cup of VELTINS MRS Racing ahead of Stefan Rosina from Slovakia (Walter Lechner Racing School), who notched up his best result this year in the Supercup with second place. Third position went to the Konrad Motorsport pilot and title defender Jeroen Bleekemolen (Netherlands).
Although he started on the damp side of the drying track after a shower in the morning, Jeroen Bleekemolen made the best get away at the start. But after three corners, pole-sitter René Rast wrested the lead back. The reigning Carrera Cup champion, who celebrated his first Supercup win in Silverstone, then slowly but surely pulled away to bring home his second victory of the season. With his result, Rast moved into second overall in the rankings behind points’ leader Jeroen Bleekemolen.
The man of the race on the Eifel circuit, however, was Patrick Huisman. After a hefty crash during qualifying, the Supercup record winner took up the race from 13th place for his SPS Performance team, but already after just one lap he had overtaken six competitors. After a breathtaking chase through the pack he finally saw the chequered flag in fourth behind the leading trio and with this result defended his third overall ranking in the points.
Austria’s Norbert Siedler (VELTINS MRS Racing) managed to slip past Britain’s Richard Williams (SPS Performance) in the final lap to secure his second fifth placing this season. As the best guest driver, Jan Seyffarth (Germany) came from the Carrera Cup to compete for the tolimit/Seyffarth Motorsport squad and finished seventh ahead of the vice champion of 2007 and 2008, Damien Faulkner (Walter Lechner Racing School) from Ireland. In his second Supercup race this year, Lance David Arnold (Germany, SPS Performance) brought home ninth. Jiri Janak from the Czech Republic, who netted his best result this season in Istanbul with third, crossed the finish line in tenth.
The 2009 season of the Porsche Mobil 1 Supercup will be extended: With two races on 31 October and 1 November, the world’s fastest international brand trophy series celebrates its premiere on the new Grand Prix circuit in Abu Dhabi as support to Formula 1. With this, the number of races in 2009 increases to a total of 13.
René Rast (winner): “Two wins in a row – that makes me really happy. Thanks to my team. I think I had the best car this weekend. Only my start wasn’t so hot. I had way too much wheel spin and had to let Jeroen overtake, but luckily I was able to take the lead again shortly afterwards. It was then relatively easy to pull away and bring home victory.”
Stefan Rosina (second): “I’m totally surprised. That was my first time on the Nürburgring and when I came here my plan was to finish in the top ten. I never dreamed my race would go so well. A huge thank you to my mechanics who put a perfect car on the track for me today. My most important goal was to keep Jeroen behind me and that’s what I concentrated on. Luckily it worked.”
Jeroen Bleekemolen (third): “That was no easy race. I had trouble changing gears – there seemed to be some problem there. We were simply not fast enough today to win. Still, I’m pleased to have at least achieved a podium result.”
