Prepare yourself for a new chapter for Porsche – the 911 GT3 S/C, the first-ever 911 GT3 Cabriolet. A car that takes the high-performance philosophy of the coupé and reimagines it as a thrilling, open-top sportscar
Fast facts: the new Porsche 911 GT3 S/C• The 911 GT3 S/C is the first-ever production 911 GT3 convertible • The 911 GT3 S/C can accelerate from 0-100 km/h (0-62 mph) in 3.9 seconds. Top speed is 313 km/h (194 mph) • Fitted with the same 4.0-litre, six-cylinder engine in the 911 GT3 coupé, producing 510 PS (375 kW) of power • Fully automatic, electrically-operated fabric roof with magnesium elements that can be open or closed at speeds up to 60 km/h (37 mph) To every Porsche driver, something magical happens when you come face-to-face with an open road. The feelings it creates are deep-rooted. Anticipation. Excitement. Enjoyment. But what if you added another element? If the thrill of that open road was enhanced by an open roof? Celebrating the unique connection between the sky above and scenery around a driver and their car isn’t new to Porsche. It’s something you can trace back to the very first sports car the company revealed in 1948 – the 356 “No. 1“ Roadster. And yet it would be another 34 years before we’d finally get to see the first series-production Porsche model unveiled when, in March 1982, the 911 SC Cabriolet was shown to the public at the Geneva Motor Show. Open-roof motoring has become a feature of the Porsche model range ever since. But now, a new landmark has been revealed. With the new 911 GT3 S/C, Porsche presents its first-ever 911 GT3 Cabriolet version. One that offers a unique blend of freedom with the unmatchable thrills of open-top driving. A high-performance sportscar in a direct, purist form – one that consistently delivers a rush of excitement and triggers a range of emotions. And the performance of the 911 GT3 S/C lends considerably to that. The 911 GT3 S/C can accelerate from 0-100 km/h (0-62 mph) in 3.9 seconds and reach a top speed of 313 km/h (194 mph). It’s fitted with the same 4.0-litre, six-cylinder engine in the 911 GT3 coupé, producing 510 PS (375 kW) of power. It’s aided in its quest to bring you pure driving thrills by being available with a manual six-speed GT transmission only, with a short gear lever that enables fast, precise gear changes for direct feedback. It’s a decision by Porsche that’s sporty by nature. And your engine soundtrack – such an engaging part of the convertible experience – is further cemented by a lightweight stainless steel sports exhaust system with two central tailpipes in Black as standard that create a sonorous, heart-pumping noise. The 911 GT3 S/C also comes with rear-axle steering with sport set-up, Porsche Active Suspension Management (PASM) with sports set-up and a ride height lowered by approximately 20 mm compared with the 911 Carrera as well as suspension adjustable for racing use. Power Steering Plus and Porsche Ceramic Composite Brake (PCCB) both come as standard – attributes that aid both performance and lend confidence in one fell swoop. Delivering both power and emotion are key attributes of the 911 GT3 S/C experience. The 911 GT3 S/C can accelerate from 0-100 km/h (0-62 mph) in 3.9 seconds and has a top speed of 313 km/h (194 mph) Photo: PorscheWhat are the exterior highlights of the new 911 GT3 S/C?The power that’s inherent in all Porsche GT models isn’t just on display in the engine bay of the 911 GT3 S/C – it’s also translated in its exterior. Here, it combines with lightweight materials and aerodynamic enhancements to elevate open-roof motoring to new heights.Take the CFRP (carbon fibre reinforced plastic) front wings, which aren’t just a way to keep the weight of the car down and offer aerodynamic benefits, they make a strong impression visually too. The bonnet, in matching exterior colour, is made of CFRP too, with its trademark air inlets catching the eye, while the doors are made of the same material. Throughout, the design language is pure in its execution, with functional items such as the Black sideskirts and gravel protection foil between the doors and rear wing. Black extends to the cowl frame in Black (satin-gloss) under which the electrically-operated convertible roof is stored, and Black mirror bases to contrast the lower and upper mirror trims in the exterior colour. At the rear, a distinctive GT3 S/C logo adorns the rear grille, with a rear wing composed of CFRP, while 20-/21-inch 911 GT3 forged magnesium lightweight wheels in California Gold come as standard, as do Porsche Ceramic Composite Brakes (PCCB) with yellow callipers. The 911 GT3 S/C also comes in a range of colours, including such classic Porsche hues as Guards Red and Oak Green Metallic Neo – naturally, you can also opt for a colour from the huge Paint To Sample range too. An optional Street Style Package includes decorative graphics, Pyro Red accents and Slate Grey Neo wheels. The 911 GT3 S/C features an electrically-operated, fully automatic roof that can be opened and closed at speeds up to 60 km/h (37 mph) Photo: PorscheHow does the convertible roof work on the 911 GT3 S/C?A key part of the 911 cabriolet experience across the range of models is the retractable roof itself. The fabric hood of the 911 GT3 S/C with integral, lightweight, magnesium elements is electrically operated and fully automatic and has been adopted from the system used in the 911 Carrera Cabriolet.Available in Black and Red (unless you opt for the Street Style Package, which is presented in Black only – for more, see below), it has a heatable, rigid glass rear screen and can be open or closed at speeds of up to 60 km/h (37 mph). It can also be operated using the vehicle key for added convenience. There’s also an integral, electrically-powered wind deflector that helps improve comfort when driving with the roof down.Eye-catching details and a sense of sporty refinement characterise the interior of the 911 GT3 S/C Photo: PorscheWhat’s the interior like in the 911 GT3 S/C?Inside the 911 GT3 S/C you’re treated to the full Porsche experience of refinement, purity and clean lines. Highlights include multifunction GT sports steering wheel with rim in Black leather and an Extended Leather Package with contrasting stitching in Silver and quilting on the door panels. Sports seats Plus with a perforated centre section in leather are standard too, with Lightweight folding sport bucket seats or 18-way, electrically-operated Adaptive Sports seats Plus available as an option. There are plenty of eye-catching details too, like the A-pillar and sun visors in leather, embossed Porsche crest on the headrests and a GT3 S/C badge below the gear lever. Matt carbon-weave finishes add to the sporty ambience, including on the trim strips on the dashboard, door panels and centre console trim. There’s also the option of the Accent Package Black finish on the door handles, dashboard trim strips, door panels and centre console trim in Black that enhances the car’s clean, elegant aesthetic. This is unashamedly a driver’s car, reflected in the omission of rear seats. The 911 GT3 S/C is laser-focused on offering a pure, driver-focused experience. Sporty, yes – but elegant too.Porsche has gone to great lengths to maximise the GT performance credentials of the 911 GT3 S/C by deploying a significant number of weight-saving measures whether in its chassis, bodywork or interior Photo: PorscheFind out how Porsche reduced the weight of the 911 GT3 S/C for maximum performanceA consistent message you’ll find relayed throughout the design of the 911 GT3 S/C is how lightweight construction and materials has led to a car that achieves its target of fusing maximum agility with precision. All these elements aid the emotional, open-top driving experience. The use of carbon-fibre reinforced plastic (CFRP) in several key areas helps keep the weight down, such as in the chassis, where rear anti-roll bar, coupling rods and shear panel help increase torsional stiffness and improve response during rapid load changes – an important asset when braking and cornering, for example. The front bonnet, front wings and doors are also made from CFRP too. Elsewhere, 20-/21-inch forged magnesium lightweight wheels reduce the weight of the car by around 9 kg (around 20 lbs), while the PCCB (Porsche Ceramic Composite Brake) system – which comes fitted as standard in the 911 GT3 S/C – is around 50 per cent lighter than traditional cast-iron brake systems. And there’s plenty more to talk about. Take the decision to offer the 911 GT3 S/C with a six-speed GT sports manual transmission only, which saves 17 kg (37 lbs) compared to the PDK – Porsche dual-clutch – transmission. And the lightweight sports exhaust system doesn’t just stir the emotions when you press the accelerator, it also helps save weight too. There are weight savings made inside the car as well, with the option of lightweight sport bucket seats that save more than 7.5 kg (16.5 lbs) compared to regular 911 seats. And the lightweight door panels are fitted with door opening loops that keep weight down as well as offering a design touch that will cheer sportscar purists. Finally, the lithium-ion starter battery that features in the 911 GT3 coupé has been further refined for its cabriolet sibling, saving half a kilogram (a little over a pound in weight) in comparison. Every gram, every ounce counts to Porsche.Weighing in at 1497 kg (3300 lbs), the 911 GT3 S/C is the lightest open-top model in the current 911 range. The optional Street Style Package from Style Porsche and Porsche Exclusive Manufaktur further opens up the opportunities of 911 GT3 S/C customers to design the car to their own individual tastes Photo: PorscheWhat is the Street Style Package for the 911 GT3 S/C?A key element of the Porsche philosophy is to offer you a wide range of opportunities to tailor the configuration of your car to suit your own tastes. And with the optional Street Style Package from Style Porsche and Porsche Exclusive Manufaktur, the freedom of open-top driving is matched by a freedom of expression in how your car looks. Put into practice that means the decorative graphics on the wings and PORSCHE logo on the sides of the 911 GT3 S/C are lent an even greater emphasis with the use of the high-contrast colour of Pyro Red, while the PORSCHE logo and 911 GT3 S/C model designation on the rear are marked out in the same colour. The wheels are finished in Slate Grey Neo and feature a contrasting accent stripe in the rim barrel in Pyro Red (high-gloss). Its wheel caps are also highlighted in Pyro Red, while the brake callipers are presented in Victory Gold.Further exterior additions for the package include airblades on the front apron in the car’s main exterior colour and statement-making tinted HD Matrix main headlights in Black. An aluminium-look fuel filler cap may seem a small detail but speaks to the pure, sporty nature of the Street Style Package.Inside, the benefits of the package are just as apparent. You see it in the Porsche crest outline embroidered on the headrests, and seat centres in the Adaptive Sports seats Plus with exclusive four-colour braided leather in Slate Grey, Guards Red, Magnesium Grey and Kalahari combined with a two-tone leather interior in Slate Grey/Guards Red. The glove box is finished in Guards Red leather and braided leather, while the seat belts, door opening loops and seat release levers are also finished in Guards Red.The sporty Pyro Red also extends to the badging inside the 911 GT3 S/C, including the model badge under the gear lever which comes with a laminated open-pored wood knob in walnut (tinted), with the shift gate in Pyro Red. The inner roof lining is in perforated Race-Tex (Slate Grey) with a Porsche crest outline graphic, a material also used in the A-pillar trim and cowl frame. They are just some of the many highlights of the optional Street Style Package, which consistently helps you make an individual statement.
