The 924 deviated from many of Porsche's traditional approaches. It had a front-mounted, water-cooled engine, coil springs on the front axle and featured a transaxle construction.

In 1979, the model range was supplemented by the 924 Turbo, whose engine – with help from an exhaust turbocharger – produced 170 PS at 5,500 rpm.
