Children in Darmstadt taught using Porsche computersSports-car manufacturer supports “Clever Mice” education initiative

Stuttgart/Darmstadt. Dr. Ing. h.c. F. Porsche AG of Stuttgart, Germany, is supplying 200 computers and monitors in support of the “Clever Mice – Children Discover Language” education initiative. The initiative is aimed at familiarizing four- to six-year-olds with the world of letters, numbers and words, thus facilitating their transition into elementary school. The computers are earmarked for 120 kindergartens in Darmstadt – the first city in which the education initiative is being rolled out. The Federal Minister of Justice, Brigitte Zypries, lobbied hard on behalf of her Darmstadt constituency.

Software manufacturer Microsoft Deutschland, IT service provider PC-Ware and Porsche have joined forces on the “Clever Mice” project. A learning program, which was specially developed by the Technische Universität Berlin and which enables customized language practice, has been installed on all of the computers. This program also enables teachers to track individual children’s progress and provides targeted advice on how to help them improve further.

“We adults are responsible for ensuring that all children receive the best educational chances at a sufficiently early stage. Failing to do so could mean they miss the boat and suffer a disadvantage for the rest of their lives. Reading and writing are basic skills that open the door to a good education. That is why Porsche is supporting the Clever Mice,” said Dr. Wendelin Wiedeking, President and CEO of Porsche AG, at the presentation of the Darmstadt-based project in the Hedwig-Dohm-Haus day-care center.
