Reigning title winner Davenport enters – Sharapova and Williams withdraw29th Porsche Tennis Grand Prix, 1 to 9 October

Stuttgart. Of the world’s four best tennis players three participate in this year’s Porsche Tennis Grand Prix. It was only yesterday that Lindsay Davenport (USA) entered the traditional tournament. The world‘s No 2 looks back on an impressive list of successes at the Porsche tournament: In 2001 and 2004 the American clinched the title at Filderstadt, in 1998 she reached the final.

Amélie Mauresmo (FRA, WTA 3) and Kim Clijsters (BEL, WTA 4) complete the top trio at the 29th Porsche Tennis Grand Prix.

Maria Sharapova (RUS, WTA 1) and Serena Williams (USA, WTA 8) had to withdraw today due to injuries. The Russian said: “I’m really disappointed that this injury is preventing me from playing in the Porsche Tennis Grand Prix, which any player will tell you is one of the best tournaments on the Sony Ericsson WTA Tour. There are always a ton of top players at that event, so it’s still going to be a great tournament for the fans, the sponsors and the media.“

What was bad news for Sharapova and Williams meant good news for Germany’s 20-year-old Anna-Lena Groenefeld (WTA 23) who moved into the main draw and thus gets a chance to play in front of a big home crowd.
