Instructions for limiting the charge level of the high-voltage battery of your Porsche Taycan to a maximum of 80%

Note: These instructions only apply to Porsche Taycan customers who have received a Porsche letter with the request to limit the charge level of the high-voltage battery to a maximum of 80%. If you have not received a corresponding Porsche letter, you do not belong to the group of addressees.

Introduction and overview

This manual describes various options for limiting the charging of the high-voltage battery of your Porsche Taycan to 80%.

With your Porsche Taycan, it is not possible to limit the charge of the high-voltage battery in advance for each available charging equipment and each supported power source.

Depending on the charging equipment and power source, your Porsche Taycan offers various options for limiting the charging to 80%:

If you charge your Porsche Taycan with alternating current (AC), the “Timer” and/or “Profile” charging functions are available to you via the central display.

If you charge your Porsche Taycan in conjunction with a Home Energy Management System (HEMS), the “Timer” charging function is available to you via the central display. The “Profile” charging function is not available.

Do not use the “Instant charging” function. If you charge your Porsche Taycan using the “Instant charging” function, no charging functions are available to limit the charge, regardless of the charging equipment and the power source, in particular because previously set charging functions such as “Timer” and/or “Profile” are also invalidated by the “Instant charging” function. For this reason, deactivate the “Instant charging” function.

If you charge your Porsche Taycan with direct current (DC), you must monitor the charging progress yourself via the display in the central display and/or via the My Porsche app on your mobile phone and end the charging process yourself before or when a charge of 80% is reached. A charging function via the central display is not available.

This manual also includes selected scenario examples. They will provide you with additional guidance.

In addition, you will find general information on the high-voltage battery including life cycle and charging instructions in the Driver’s Manual for your Porsche Taycan, in particular in the sections “More safety for driving pleasure”, “Air conditioning and ergonomics” and “Mobility and minor repairs.”

Differentiation between charging with alternating current (AC) and direct current (DC)

Your Porsche Taycan can be charged with alternating current (AC) or direct current (DC).

Depending on the charging equipment and power source, your Porsche Taycan offers various options for limiting the charging to 80%. Therefore, a distinction between charging with alternating current (AC) and charging with direct current (DC) is important for limiting the charging to 80%.

Therefore, make sure whether you are charging your Porsche Taycan with alternating current (AC) or direct current (DC) before every charging process.

A distinction between charging with alternating current (AC) and direct current (DC) is possible, depending on the country, at each charging process using the charging plug.

If you charge your Porsche Taycan at home using a wall box or your own charging cable, it is usually charging with alternating current (AC). You will need your own charging cable, e.g. when charging at many public charging pedestals (if they do not have a permanently connected charging cable themselves).

Examples of using your own charging cable and charging with alternating current (AC) are the Porsche Mobile Charger Connect and the Porsche Mobile Charger Plus.

If you charge your Porsche Taycan at a so-called fast charging station, it is usually charging with direct current (DC). You cannot charge using your own charging cable at a fast charging station, as it has its own charging cable already connected. Fast charging stations are primarily located at designated fast charging locations, e.g. at motorway exits, rest points or petrol stations. The following figure shows a fast charging station.

Charging with alternating current (AC)

“Profile” charging function

The automatic control of the battery charge can be set by setting a “Profile”. If the profile function is active, the high-voltage battery will be charged as quickly as possible to a programmed charge state as soon as the vehicle is connected to the mains supply. To create a charging profile that limits the charge of the high-voltage battery of your Porsche Taycan to 80% when charging with alternating current (AC), perform the following steps.

Step 1

In the main menu, tap on the “Charging” symbol (battery symbol).

Step 2

Tap on the menu item “Profiles”.

Step 3

Edit the general charging profile by tapping on the “pen” symbol.

Step 4

Use the slider under “Minimum charge” to set the charge to “80%”.

Step 5

Activate the “Optimised charging” function. This is essential because the so-called “minimum charge” of “80%” acts as a “maximum charge” and thus the required limitation of the charge of the high-voltage battery to “80%” is made.

Make sure that the “Profile” is activated. To do this, it must be ticked. In addition, when “Profile” is activated, “General charging profile” appears below the charging display.

If you also use the “Timer” charging function in addition to the “Profile” charging function, please ensure that the same target charging state of “80%” is stored in both functions.

Please note that the “Profile” is set or activated before each charging process. When using multiple profiles, make sure that none of the profiles exceed the maximum charging level of 80%.

Also make sure that the “Instant charging” function is deactivated before each charging process.

“Timer” charging function

The “Timer” charging function is used to charge the high-voltage battery of your Porsche Taycan to a target charge state set by you at a programmed departure time. To create a “Timer” that limits the charge of the high-voltage battery of your Porsche Taycan to 80% when charging with alternating current (AC), perform the following steps.

Step 1

In the main menu, tap on the “Charging” symbol (battery symbol).

Step 2

Tap on the “Timer” menu item.

Step 3

Select the date and departure time.

Step 4

Set the “charging target” to “80%”.

Step 5

Activate charging.

Step 6

Make sure that the “Timer” is activated. To do this, it must be ticked. In addition, when “Timer” is activated, “Next timer” is displayed below the charging display.

It is also possible to create several “Timer”s. To do this, tap on “Add new timer”.

Depending on your individual charging behaviour, you may have to create a separate “Timer” for each day of the week and the respective departure time.

Please note that before each charging process, either an existing “Timer” must be activated or a new “Timer” must be added and activated. If the “Timer” function is not active, the high-voltage battery is charged to at least the minimum charge state programmed in the profile function.

Also make sure that the “Instant charging” function is deactivated before each charging process.

Charging via a Home Energy Management System (HEMS)

If your charging equipment is integrated into a home energy management system (HEMS), it is not always possible to automatically limit the state of charge via the central display of your Porsche Taycan.

Home energy management systems are often installed in connection with photovoltaic systems and/or home energy storage systems.

If you charge your Porsche Taycan via a so-called Home Energy Management System (HEMS), please use the “Timer” charging function in the central display of your Porsche for charging processes to limit the charging of the high-voltage battery to 80%. The “Profile” charging function is not available.

Some Home Energy Management Systems (HEMS) of certain providers also have the option of programming in a maximum load. If available, you can also use these charging functions to limit the charging of the high-voltage battery of your Porsche Taycan to 80%. To operate and programme these charging functions, please follow the instructions of the respective manufacturer.

Instructions for deactivating the “Instant charging” function

Do not use the “Instant charging” function.

Deactivating the “Instant charging” function

If you charge your Porsche Taycan using the “Instant charging” function, no charging functions are available to limit the charge, regardless of the charging equipment and the power source, in particular because previously set charging functions such as “Timer” and/or “Profile” are also invalidated by the “Instant charging” function. Therefore, please ensure that the “Instant charging” function is deactivated before each charging process. To deactivate the “Instant charging” function, please perform the following steps.

Step 1

In the main menu, tap on the “Charging” symbol (battery symbol).

Step 2

Tap on the menu item “Overview”.

Deactivate the “Instant charging” function by removing the tick next to “Instant charging”.

Monitoring of charging progress via the central display

If you charge your Porsche Taycan with direct current (DC), you must monitor the charging progress yourself via the display in the central display and end the charging process yourself before or when a charge of 80% is reached. A charging function via the central display is not available.

Monitoring of charging progress via the My Porsche app

If you charge your Porsche Taycan with direct current (DC), you can also monitor the charging progress yourself via the My Porsche app on your mobile phone as an alternative to the display in the central display.

Important information on independent monitoring of the charging progress

When observing the charge level, please note that it is often difficult to estimate the time remaining until a charge of 80% is reached. Therefore, monitor charging progress continuously.

Please also note that the estimated charging time displayed by your Porsche Taycan may differ significantly from the actual charging time. In addition, your Porsche Taycan generally focuses on “100%” charge level when estimating the charging time (and not on “80%”). The charging speed of your Porsche Taycan generally also depends significantly on the charge of the high-voltage battery. At the start of a charging process (especially in the case of a high-voltage battery with a low charge level), charging is usually faster than at the end of the charging process (especially in the case of a high-voltage battery that is already charged as much as possible).

In addition to the charging type or the power source, the charging process (charging time, strain on the battery, etc.) is also significantly influenced by the electrical characteristics of the power source, in particular kilowatts (kW), amperes (A), volts (V) and phases.

Automatic termination of the charging process

If you charge your Porsche Taycan with direct current (DC), you must monitor the charging progress and end the charging process yourself before or when a charge of 80% is reached.
