Technology leader and timeless sculpture: the 911 Turbo gave the design philosophy “form follows function” an even more exciting meaning – and created a legend that continues to fascinate today.

At the beginning of the 1970s, turbo engines were considered untamable off the racetrack. But Porsche set new technical standards with the 911 RSR Turbo concept car presented at the IAA in 1973 – and also impressed with an uncompromising design.

Almost a year later, Ferry Porsche’s sister, Louise Piëch, received a very special gift for her 70th birthday: the very first Turbo, the legendary Porsche 911 Turbo “No. 1”. Back then, it still had the narrow body of the 911 Carrera and a 2.7-litre engine.

The premiere of the 911 Turbo with a 3.0-litre engine a few weeks later at the 1974 Paris Motor Show caused an even bigger sensation. The independent type number 930 became synonymous with the fastest road sports car of its time and the most exclusive and extraordinary way to drive a 911.

Iconic Turbo design.

The 911 Turbo showed its power from day one, even when stationary. The rear wing was reminiscent of a “whale tail” and became the main identifying feature of the sports car. The widened body created space for wider wheels and a specific turbo chassis to transfer the increased power to the asphalt. Since the 996 generation, side air intakes have rounded off the design of the 911 Turbo and optimised engine cooling.

Tartan pattern.

The interior of the 911 Turbo also impressed from the very outset with its sporty exclusivity - thanks to the so-called tartan cloth: from the blue-green "Black Watch" of the 911 RSR Turbo and the "McLaughlan" in red and blue on the 911 Turbo "No. 1" to the "Dress Mackenzie" in brown and beige, which Ferry Porsche chose for his personal 911 Turbo 3.0. All three variants were reserved for the Turbo models in the first model year while all 911 models could be equipped with them on request in the 1976 model year.

A real rarity: the improved 330 PS version of the 911 Turbo from 1982 from the special requests department with a special "flat nose" body – also known as the Slantnose or 930 S. The aerodynamic design was based on the Porsche 935 racing car, which dominated long-distance races for years.

911 Turbo S Exclusive Series.

A 911 Turbo S attracts attention everywhere, especially in Golden Yellow Metallic: in 2017, Porsche Exclusive Manufaktur presented the first limited production run of the Turbo S – limited to 500 units. Completed with visible components in carbon-weave finish and increased performance.
