In 2003, a car was revealed that raised Porsche performance to new levels. It, along with subsequent versions of the 911 GT3 RS, have helped build its fearsome reputation as a road-going sportscar that loves doing battle on the track
Ever since it was first revealed in 2003, the 911 GT3 RS has become synonymous with peak Porsche performance on both road and track. Including that first-ever iteration – the type 996.2 version of the 911 – there have now been six versions of the 911 GT3 RS (as of May 2025). Many of the distinctive qualities that then set that first model apart from other sportscars still hold true today in the form of the current type 992 version of the 911 GT3 RS. In essence, that means a high-revving, naturally-aspirated engine, coupled with lightweight materials incorporated throughout. And it’s all in a sportscar that benefits from the rigorous attention and expertise gained from decades of Porsche engineering and design know-how.Each generation of 911 GT3 RS models has its fans and it continues to be Porsche sportscar that is in high demand when it comes to those looking to buy a classic… or future classic. Even the first 911 GT3 RS models offer stunning performance – and with each new model, performance is further enhanced. Find out how fast the six Porsche 911 GT3 RS models made over the years are with our guide.

How fast is the 911 GT3 RS (type 992)? Launched 20210-100 km/h (0-62 mph) 3.2 seconds
Top speed 296 km/h (184 mph)
Power 525 PS
The current 911 GT3 RS continues to push the boundaries like never before. With 525 PS of power and the ability to hit the 0-100 km/h (0-62 mph) mark in 3.2 seconds, put simply, it’s the most extreme street-legal Porsche GT car ever produced. And don’t just take our word for it – just ask Porsche test driver, Jörg Bergmeister, who on its launch described it as “the best-handling 911 road car ever on a racetrack”. “It’s so much fun, especially in the high-speed corners – the performance is just amazing,” said Jörg at the time. With the 992 GT3 RS, this most exceptionally versatile of Porsche sportscars just got even better.

Top speed 310 km/h (193 mph)
Power 520 PS
Porsche is never one to rest on its laurels. The model year update for the 991 version of the 911 GT3 RS arrived just three years after its predecessor with a new rear wing that it shared with the 911 GT2 RS, sitting slightly higher than previously. New underbody aerodynamic improvements and a rear diffuser all helped shave 0.1 second off the previous 0-100 km/h (0-62 mph) time, while power was increased to 520 PS.How fast is the 911 GT3 RS (type 991.1)? Launched 20150-100 km/h (0-62 mph) 3.3 seconds
Top speed 310 km/h (193 mph)
Power 500 PS
The 911 GT3 RS (type 991.1) was a big leap forward for the model. While engine and aerodynamic advancements were hugely important factors – as they always are – this was the first 911 GT3 RS that you could order with the PDK dual-clutch automatic gearbox. That meant that launch control made its debut here for the first time too, resulting in a hugely significant improvement in the 0-100 km/h (0-62 mph) time to an eye-watering 3.3 seconds. How fast is the 911 GT3 RS (type 997.2)? Launched 20100-100 km/h (0-62 mph) 4.0 seconds
Top speed 310 km/h (193 mph)
Power 450 PS
When the updated type 997.2 version first went on sale in 2010, just four years on from the launch of the 911 GT3 RS (type 997.1), it was continuing evidence of the commitment of Porsche engineers to advancing the engine offering improvements for one of its most recognisable sportscars. First revealed to the public at the IAA show in Frankfurt in September 2009, its 450 PS 3.8-litre engine was more powerful, lower in weight and boasted shorter transmission ratios (the model was made available in six-speed manual only) than the model it replaced. That, of course, meant a sportscar that was even quicker than its predecessor… but the 997 GT3 RS models also managed one last magnificent hurrah. It came in 2011 in the form of the limited release 911 GT3 RS 4.0, a car that many today consider an all-time Porsche great. The last-ever 911 GT3 RS to feature an iteration of the legendary Mezger Boxer engine, it boasted a huge 500 PS and could sprint from 0-100 km/h (0-62 mph) in under four seconds (3.9 seconds to be exact).

How fast is the 911 GT3 RS (type 997.1)?Launched 20060-100 km/h (0-62 mph) 4.2 seconds
Top speed 310 km/h (193 mph)
Power 415 PS
A primary feature of all 911 GT3 RS models is how lightweight construction and parts help drivers eke out the most from the car’s engine and dynamic chassis. When the first of what would be two GT3 RS versions made of the type 997 model –mm– was introduced, it saved up to 20 kg of weight compared to its sibling, the 911 GT3 (type 997.1). It did that with weight-saving features such as lightweight bucket seats and a carbon-fibre rear wing. The latter remains both a performance and visual touchpoint for every 911 GT3 RS made to this day.For this particular model it meant a 0-100 km/h (0-62 mph) time that shaved 0.2 seconds off of the official time of the previous 911 GT3 RS model (type 996.2), while power increased to 415 PS.How fast is the 911 GT3 RS (type 996.2)?Launched 20030-100 km/h (0-62 mph) 4.4 seconds
Top speed 306 km/h (190 mph)
Power 381 PS
The 911 GT3 RS was first introduced in 2003 following the update of the type 996 model – the first 911 series to feature water-cooled rather than air-cooled engines. It certainly created a buzz at launch, with styling that echoed that of the legendary Carrera RS 2.7 and performance, whether on road or track, which made everyone sit up and take notice. Only available in white, with either red or white inscriptions, it remains a pure driving experience – as its 0-100 km/h (0-62 mph) time of just 4.4 seconds amply displays.
Consumption and emission information 911 GT3 RS (WLTP): Fuel consumption combined: 13.2 l/100 km (preliminary value); CO₂ emissions combined: 299 g/km (preliminary value); CO₂ class: G (preliminary value).
