Every improvement helped make the 911 faster, more fuel-efficient, more capable and even more enjoyable to drive. One of the most hotly debated changes of all happened just over three decades after the 911 was first introduced when Porsche switched from air-cooled to water-cooled engines with the introduction of the 911 (type 996) in 1997.

The unique character of the air-cooled 911 modelsSince its debut in 1963, the distinctive sound of an air-cooled flat-six engine had been one of the defining traits of the 911, along with its lightweight construction and the benefit that a low-lying flat engine afforded you when it came to designing a lower, sporty design for the car. As a result, some people were worried that by switching to water cooling, the 911 might lose some of its unique character. But any concerns were soon misplaced. In fact, the opposite was true, because rather than eroding the car’s singular qualities, the switch to water cooling enhanced them. It allowed the engineers at Porsche to make the 911 even more powerful and yet more refined. And in doing so, it provided the foundation for all future generations to build on.

What are the benefits of a water-cooled engine in the 911?Engine temperatures can be more precisely controlled with water cooling, giving improved efficiency and durability. In the case of the 911, it also allowed engineers to develop a power source that now had four valves – rather than two – per cylinder, allowing for better ‘breathing’. Crucially, moving to water-cooled engines helped the 911 to meet the increasingly strict emissions and noise regulations that were being rolled out by governments around the world. Hitting these targets were likely to prove ever more impossible with air-cooled engines, so the move was an investment in the future of the 911. It allowed it to continue to evolve whole preserving its core characteristics. An important element that hasn’t changed is that the 911 continued to be powered by a flat-six engine. It’s the car’s heart and soul; an intrinsic part of what makes a 911 a 911. Indeed, in many ways the move to water cooling allowed Porsche to unlock the true potential of a new generation of flat-six engines. Without water cooling it’s uncertain whether models such as the 911 GT2 RS or 911 GT3 would ever exist, or whether the 911 would be able to provide the kind of performance expected of a sports car in the 21st century.

Water-cooled engines: defining the future of every 911 since 1997Innovation and evolution have always been central to the 911. It’s a car that has never stood still and has constantly asked ‘what if?’, but always with a clear purpose. Porsche designers and engineers have always introduced new technology not just to flesh out a spec sheet or follow a fashion, but to make the 911 ever more exciting to drive and more rewarding to own. The switch from air- to water-cooling didn’t kill off the 911 – it breathed new life into it, allowing its legend to continue to grow.
