The Porsche Travel Experience Slovenia offers participants soaring alpine passes, great driving and stays in hotel designed by star architect, Špela Videčnik. She explains her inspiration
For the participants on this Porsche Travel Experience Slovenia, the journey begins in fog. But after we’ve driven through the 23rd bend on Slovenia’s stunning Vršič Pass – the country’s highest drivable mountain road – the view suddenly opens up. It’s a time for us to park up our Macan Electric cars to pause.Spreading out in front of us are the Julian Alps in all their rugged splendour. The sun is winning the battle against the mist. A moment when you forget everything else. That’s what this immersion in Slovenia’s natural beauty can do for you.A Porsche Macan Electric on the Vršič Pass, Slovenia’s highest drivable mountain pass, and a destination for the Porsche Travel Experience Slovenia Photo: Klaus SchwaigerMountains, lakes and beautiful modern hotels: Porsche Travel Experience SloveniaSlovenia may be small in size, but it punches above its weight when it comes to natural gifts. It’s a land of high mountains, crystalline lakes, a compact but beautiful coastline and great architecture – both classic and modern. To help us understand the latter, we’ve lined up a rendezvous with a woman whose architecture tells the story of the region with a modern twist – Špela Videčnik. But first, our Slovenian roadtrip leads us through the Soča Valley. The Emerald River, with its unreal blue tone, accompanies us on a drive into the Triglav National Park – over suspension bridges, past ancient stone edifices that span it and through golden autumn forests. At every turn, Slovenia reveals itself from a different perspective. And every page tells of originality. There are plenty of moments on the Porsche Travel Experience Slovenia where you’ll want to park up and take in the country’s bountiful natural beauty Photo: Klaus SchwaigerWho is Špela Videčnik? We meet Špela in front of the Hotel Bohinj, which she designed herself. It’s one of the hideaways where the guests of the Porsche Travel Experience Slovenia get to stay. It quickly becomes clear that this hotel is not just a building – it’s an attitude.Slovenian architect, Špela Videčnik – designer of the Hotel Bohinj, where guests of the Porsche Travel Experience Slovenia stay during their trip Photo: Klaus SchwaigerŠpela takes her time as she guides us through the hotel, which blends seamlessly into the alpine landscape. There is stained larch wood, generous glass surfaces and spaces that create encounters and yet also allow for retreat. For her, architecture is not a statement that is imposed, but a dialogue with the environment. “I look at what’s there and try to understand it,” she says. Her approach is deeply respectful and deeply rooted.Špela studied with one of the true greats of modern architecture, Zaha Hadid, and now teaches at renowned universities such as Harvard and UCLA. And yet it’s the Slovenian landscape that shapes her – its traditions, its people, its history. The hotel features motifs from ancient legends and handmade furniture made from local materials. The shape of the traditional ‘harp’ – a wooden structure for drying hay – became a stylised sculpture in the interior. Sustainability, craftsmanship, identity – that is Špela’s code.Špela’s work explotes Slovenian identity using the language of contemporary architecture Photo: Klaus SchwaigerAn avant-garde hotel in LjubljanaLater, after heading to Slovenia’s delightful capital, Ljubljana, Špela reveals another of her projects: the Boutique Hotel AS. Avant-garde design on the outside, plenty of surprises on the inside. Eclectic. Bold. A creative play of materials, light and perspective. And the recurring thought that Slovenia is a country that’s not understood through grand gestures but through its depth.Špela (right) in front of the avant-garde facade design of the Boutique Hotel AS she designed in Slovenia’s capital, Ljubljana Photo: Klaus SchwaigerWe are drawn back to Bohinj. Back to its lake and its magical stone bridge. The lake is as smooth as glass. Only a wooden boat floats on its surface. “The history of a place is always the first inspiration,” Špela had said earlier. Here, you’re able to understand exactly what she means.
