Flicking through images of great Porsche cars on Instagram is one of life’s little pleasures. But nothing beats seeing them in the metal – and there’s no better place than one of the many Porsche events that are held across the globe each year. Here are some of the best ones
Whether you’re an enthusiast or just breaking into the Porsche scene, an owner or just a lover of beautiful and historic sports cars and race cars, few things are more exciting than going along to an event where you can get up close and personal with them. Fortunately, there are plenty of shows, big or small, in almost every corner of the world. We’ve gathered together some of the best and most interesting ones, from those where the car is always the star to others where billing is shared with art, food, music and more. From dedicated Porsche events to those who celebrate all facets of car culture, there’s something here for everyone.
Germany • Oldtimer Grand Prix • 12-14 August 2022Any chance you have to visit the legendary Nürburgring is always time well spent. But particularly so when the Oldtimer Grand Prix takes over the circuit. One of the biggest events of its kind on the European mainland, it’s being held for the 49th time this year. Hundreds of classic motorsport vehicles line up across a vast number of different races and parades, from classic touring cars to beautiful, historic F1 cars. It’s a unique chance to see Porsche cars from the 356 to its many incredible race cars and experience the sounds, the smells and the sights as they roar around the famous track.

USA • Werks Reunion Monterey Classic • 19 August 2022Run by the Porsche Club of America, the world’s biggest single-marque car club, this all-day event – part of the Monterey Car Week – showcases every Porsche imaginable, from road car to race car. It’s a Porsche show for everyone. Just register your car to parade it alongside others of its particular type in the Porsche Corral. But if you think your Porsche has what it takes to beat others in show, the Porsche Judged Field Event is for those who have cars that have been particularly well looked after. What’s more, entry is free for spectators.

Porsche Sports Car Together Fest will be held over Labor Day weekend (2-4 September 2022) at the legendary Indianapolis Motor Speedway
UK • Silverstone Classic • 26-28 August 2022Treasured classics and a huge line-up of retro races make the Silverstone Classic one of the most popular events in the calendar. The Porsche presence is always strong among the sports cars, GT cars, touring cars and endurance cars, while the historic F1 cars are always a big pull. It’s an event that makes a big play of how it allows fans to get up close and personal with these beautiful machines in the paddock. The Classic is also a little different to many other events in that it offers live music concerts every night and is a real family event. If you’re daring enough – or have children who are! – you can try your hand at the likes of BMX, skateboard and scooters in what they are calling the Adrenaline Zone. But that’s plenty of adrenaline rushes to be had elsewhere over the British Summer Bank Holiday weekend.

The organisers sum up their philosophy very succinctly: “We feel that no model is more important than another. If you love your Porsche, we want you to have it at the event.” One of the highlights of this year’s event, held in late August, will be the display of cars submitted for this year’s Porsche Classic Restoration Challenge from the Area East region – a competition where dealerships across the US help to return a Porsche sportscar back to its original glory. The Check 22 event will once again be centred on the streets of Chicago – and as it’s run as a not-for-profit organisation, proceeds will benefit a local community group.

For the latter, that means Streetart.Motorsport.Revival., a unique Porsche event that celebrates classic Porsche cars of all types alongside suitably appropriate art installations. This year it takes place in Wermelskirchen, between Wuppertal and Leverkusen. Themed ‘The Factory’, the event boasts a youthful festival atmosphere that few others have.

USA • Porsche Sports Car Together Fest • 2-4 September 2022Any event held at one of motorsport’s most iconic venues – the Indianapolis Motor Speedway – is worth a visit. Add in some of the greatest Porsche road cars and race cars in America and you have a must-see. Held over the Labor Day holiday weekend (2-4 September 2022), the Sports Car Together Fest will focus on the very best in high-performance Porsche models. This year it hopes to gather together the world’s largest number of Porsche GT cars in one place and celebrate 50 years of the RS models. Besides that, the latest round of the Porsche Carrera Cup of North America takes place on track over the same weekend.

Think of it as a cross between the renowned Goodwood Festival of Speed, a concours event, track meet and the coolest fancy dress bash you’ve ever been to. Its patrons, staff and drivers alike, are encouraged to wear period clothes from throughout the classic automotive years at a popular gathering (get your tickets early) where you’re transported back in time to the golden age of motoring. Porsche Classic will once again be taking part in this legendary event and welcoming fans to its popular stand.

UK • Porsche Classics At The Castle • 25 September 2022Taking place in the shadow of Hedingham Castle, about 80km north east of London, is a Porsche event that zeroes in on a very specific period for the marque. Porsche roadcars and racecars from 1948-1973 come together at Porsche Classic At The Castle. This year, the focus will be on celebrating the 50th anniversaries of the mighty 911 Carrera RS 2.7 and 911 RSR. There are no entries on the gate, so make sure you buy your ticket in advance.

Open air-cooled show: California’s Luftgekühlt is one of the hottest tickets in the Porsche community
USA • Luftgekühlt • 9 October 2022Named after the German phrase for ‘air-cooled’, Luftgekühlt showcases Porsche sportscars from the 356 up to the very last air-cooled model, the 911 (Type 993). Since 2014, this US Porsche event has held gatherings in a number of unique locations – previous venues have included the Universal Studios backlot in Hollywood and Indianapolis’ historic Bottleworks district. This year – Luftgekühlt 8 – it’s be back in Los Angeles again. One of the coolest Porsche events in the calendar, in more ways than one.
