Find out how Porsche is harnessing the power of AI in its cars, finance and everyday business practices with Tobias Grosse-Puppendahl
In our job insight series, Shaping Porsche, we invite Porsche employees from across the business to talk about how they got their start at Porsche, their roles and responsibilities and everyday lives. Harnessing the power of Artificial Intelligence is crucial to any business – including Porsche. Tobias Grosse-Puppendahl has a leading role in innovating and implementing AI across the company. Find out how as he explains more. What do you do at Porsche, Tobias?“My job title is Principal Enterprise Architect Data and AI. It’s a role in the IT department at Porsche where we take care of enabling our business units to be able to work with data and AI. We want them to have all the tools and platforms necessary to make them successful.“I’ve been working for Porsche for seven years now. The first two years were in innovation management and electrics and electronics, where I’ve been working on innovation projects such as battery optimisation.“In my role today I actually work across all areas within Porsche, for example our cars, production and finance. So, it’s very wide. One of my latest projects is the introduction of a Generative AI platform that enables our business units to build their own agents using Porsche data.”

Why is working at Porsche your dream job? “I think there are several reasons. One, of course, is the topic. There’s no topic which is more pressing and more relevant than AI at the moment. That’s both from a customer perspective – bringing great experiences to our customers – and from a company’s perspective that means helping drive efficiency, driving our employees towards doing more valuable work and not just repetitive tasks. What’s really interesting is that I can serve the whole company in my role.”What’s the best thing about working at Porsche?“One of the things is that no day is the same! For me, I think it’s really the broad range of different use cases that also come to me and ask for help. So, one day you get to know something about production of vehicles, and then the next day you will talk about finance or purchasing. I think that it’s very unique in my job.“We also currently have three PhD students working with us – it’s part of a joint collaboration model with a number of universities. They work on ‘frontier’ topics in AI which we will then bring to the company. It means we are able to explore new things, learn new things, and really cover the top-notch of AI topics. At the same time we also have an impact in the company. We don’t just do research for research reasons.“But there are also some more personal reasons that are great about working for Porsche. The company enables me to combine my private life with my job pretty well. For example, I’m working part-time right now. My youngest one will go to kindergarten soon – he’s now nine months old – but to have this flexibility is really great. Having the support of my colleagues to do this means a lot.”

What motivates you each day?“I think experiences motivate me – experiences that I can help bring to other people with technology, to get to an end point where when someone says, ‘Hey, this has been a useful tool for me’ or ‘I’ve had a great experience’.“These are things I would never have expected and they are magical to me. It’s also about having an impact in the company and doing things that other people think are important. For example, when I walk around our offices and I see people using Porsche Co-Driver on their screens and chatting with it then I feel proud.”What are your earliest Porsche memories? “I grew up in a rural area in the north-western part of Germany. There weren’t many Porsche cars there! But when I occasionally saw one I was always fascinated by them as they embodied great design, exclusivity and sportiness. And then I remember when I saw the first Panamera, which I thought was so unique. I’d never seen a car like that before. And that had me enchanted.“Before working for Porsche I was a fellow at Downing College at the University of Cambridge and working in research for Microsoft. I drove an electric vehicle on a business trip to the Microsoft headquarters in Seattle. And I knew then that this is the future. Soon after, Porsche published its Mission E concept [which would become the Taycan electric sportscar]. When I saw it I thought, ‘Wow, this is so much better’. It seemed like a unique concept and I wanted to be part of it. When I moved back to Germany I was searching for an employer – and that’s when I saw an opportunity to work for Porsche.”Discover how Tobias shapes the future of Porsche
