Interior designers. Content creators. Long-time Porsche fans. Josh and Matt are redefining what it means to make a space your own – from their home to their electric Porsche
Josh and Matt are an Australian couple known for their joyful approach to interior design and life on their Instagram and TikTok accounts, gaining them millions of followers. With a background in architecture and IT, they have now built a new career, using their love of colour and creativity to help transform their home and garden to reflect their vibrant personalities. Josh and Matt are also avid Porsche fans, who brought their love of colour and creativity to life when configuring their new Porsche Macan Turbo Electric. They discuss what good design means to them, how their Porsche – the second Macan they have owned – has become part of the family and why they believe electric is the way to go. For content creators Josh (left) and Matt, their Macan Turbo Electric is full of small joys and big design moments – thoughtfully configured, with personal touches that make it impossible not to fall for Photo: PorscheWho are influencers Josh and Matt? Josh “We’ve been working in social media and interior design for about four and a half years. When we first met, we were both in a different world. I was working the night shift at McDonald’s. Matt was working in a supermarket. We were both studying at university. I studied architecture and interior design, while Matt studied IT. “Just before I graduated, I realised that I didn’t want to be an architect. I only had a month left, so I saw it through to the end, but I knew I wanted a career in the creative industry. Then, when the pandemic hit and I lost my job, that set us off on a completely different trajectory. “We started posting on social media and set up a business making candles. It just grew and evolved into a full-time career on social media, where we share our life and decorate our house. We still haven’t fully processed what has happened. It’s strange, but we feel blessed every day because we get to do what we love.” Josh and Matt’s social media journey began in a small flat – now their Macan Turbo is parked outside the Australian couple’s spacious home that they’re renovating in Melbourne Photo: PorscheMatt “We really did start out as a business trying to sell candles. Then we started sharing more about the apartment we were decorating at the time. We were renters back then, so we shared lots of rental-friendly design tips. It evolved from there, and we started sharing more about ourselves and our relationship. That led to us buying our first house. Now we’re fully focused on renovating our own place.” Josh “Our content isn’t just about interior design. It’s more about a design movement that puts personality first. We aim to inspire people to project who they are, discover their own mind and translate it to their home – there’s no better feeling than being surrounded by something that represents you.” How do you come up with the ideas for your renovations? Josh “We sometimes have quite different ideas about what we want to do with the house and don’t always see eye-to-eye. But I think that’s helped the design process, because we end up compromising and trying to accommodate both of our ideas. “We don’t plan too far ahead now. Our house is the way it is at the moment because we haven’t planned everything in advance; we’re figuring things out as we go along. It’s a refreshing take on a renovation project, not driven by the idea that you need to do it in two weeks and then move on to the next house to become a house flipper. “We’re trying to show that it’s a slow process that should evolve with you throughout your life. It doesn’t matter how long it takes.” Josh and Matt believe that great design provokes emotion. It’s why they spent so much time personalising their Macan Turbo just the way they liked it, like the rich, earthy tones they chose for its interior Photo: PorscheWhat is good design? Josh “Good design is soul driven. You connect with it straight away. That’s the connection I’m looking for. I think that's why I’ve always been drawn to Porsche cars – I had that connection instantly.” Matt “Something we really believe in is personalisation. We love how customisable a Porsche is. Our Macan Turbo looks completely different to any other Macan we’ve seen on the road, purely because of the customisations we’ve made. Our home is an extension of our mind – and so is our Porsche.” What do you love most about Porsche design? Josh “The first Porsche I saw as a child was the 911, and then I started learning about all the other models. I was amazed at how the Porsche design language could transcend different models and types of vehicles. I just knew that I would find a way to own one of these cars one day. I realised how powerful design can be as a language. It can transcend everything else. It doesn’t matter what country you’re from, or who you are as a person, Porsche design language is universal.” Matt “I love how that carries on – Porsche DNA is in every model. There are subtle design cues. As soon as you see them, you just know it’s a Porsche, whether it’s the Taycan or the 911. Another thing I love about Porsche is that every detail feels considered.” You’ve described yourselves as maximalists – how does that fit with Porsche design? Josh “We wouldn’t call ourselves maximalists, rather curated maximalists. It’s a more subdued version, where we’re careful about what we add. I think that’s why we gravitate so much towards Porsche – the cars strike a careful balance in terms of their details. “I love Porsche interiors, where there’s a good balance between tactile buttons, usability and the right number of screens. The maximalist aspect comes from options like Paint to Sample or the ability to customise your Porsche to reflect your personality.” With its tactile Race-Tex and dark brown leather interior, including Neodyme inserts, as well as air suspension, Josh says their Macan Turbo Electric is like a luxurious “living room on wheels” Photo: PorscheCan you tell us about your Porsche journey? Josh “We previously had a Porsche Macan T in Miami Blue and we loved it. But we couldn’t wait to get a Macan Electric.” Matt “The Macan T was perfect for us. It had a lot of nice upgrades over the base model. It was a beautiful first Porsche, a great introduction to the brand – and Miami Blue is one of our favourite Porsche colours.” Josh “Our current car is a Macan Turbo Electric in Papaya Metallic. Once you’re introduced to Porsche, it sparks this urge to start collecting. Now, we can’t wait to find out what the next one is going to be.” What’s your favourite thing about your Macan Turbo Electric? Matt “Mine isthe dark brown leather interior. Our Macan Turbo feels almost mid-century inspired, with its orange exterior and brown interior, paired with Neodyme wheels and the [interior] Neodyme inlays.” Josh “Then there’s the Race-Tex steering wheel and roof lining. Everything you touch and interact with feels amazing. I don’t like leaving the house, so it was important to me that the car felt like a living room on wheels! And it does.” Why did you choose a Macan Electric? Josh “It’s exciting that Porsche has managed to create an electric car that still had the soul of a Porsche. To those who say electric cars don’t have a soul, I’d say they just haven’t experienced an electric Porsche.” Matt “There are so many other aspects to the car – not just the fact that it’s electric – like the handling and driving dynamics. We’ve driven other electric cars, but this feels like a completely different experience – very familiar, but at the same time so futuristic. I love the sound of the sports engine and the instant performance that comes with the electric motor.” Josh and Matt’s social media account – @joshandmattdesign – has gained them millions of followers, with 3.5m on TikTok and 2.7m on Instagram Photo: PorscheWhat’s it like driving the Macan Electric? Josh “It’s amazing how well connected it is to the road. It weighs nearly 2,500 kg (5,500 lbs), but handles like a car half its weight. I often forget when I’m driving it that it’s an SUV, because it just doesn’t feel like one.” What’s your favourite thing about your car? Matt “For me, it’s the pop-up [rear] spoiler. I have always loved cars with that feature. It almost feels like a Transformer.” Josh “And I really love the air suspension. I think it’s so handy. It’s great fun changing the height when I’m washing the car or going down our driveway.” Finally, what does ‘LOLJAM’ mean on the license plate of your Macan Turbo? Josh “It’s our social media tagline at the end of every video. We say, ‘Lots of love, Josh and Matt’. It’s our way of saying goodbye to our audience and fans. I love the touch of having it on the number plate, but we’ve also got it on our seats. “This Porsche is a manifestation of our dreams coming true. When I was young, I started studying mathematics and finance to try and work out how to budget and at what age I’d be able to buy my first Porsche. Buying a Porsche has always been my goal, and I don’t think the kid version of me would ever have realised that this is how I would achieve it. I’m very happy that it’s happened and that I’ve got it in the garage.”
