Over the years, various police forces have called on Porsche to support their high-speed needs. Let’s take a look at some of the world’s coolest police cars
Dial 911 and, if you’re lucky, a Porsche might turn up. Since the 1960s, Porsche has been supplying police cars to various police forces around the world. Blending excellent performance with everyday practicality, these are police cars that any offender wouldn’t want to see in their rear-view mirror. From the Porsche 356 to the 918 Spyder, here are some of the coolest Porsche police cars that have been in service.Porsche 911 (type 997) police carAustrian police force 911 (type 996), one of the last-ever Porsche police cars Photo: PorscheIn the 1960s and ’70s it was not unusual to see a Porsche police or gendarmerie vehicle with a flashing blue light on its roof. In 2017, Austrian police received a loan of a 911 (type 997) from Porsche. Complete with Polizei livery, blue flashing lights and radio, the car was put to use patrolling Austria’s motorways.Porsche Taycan police carA Porsche Taycan police car, in use by the Dubai police force Photo: PorscheFamous for its exotic car scene, Dubai needed a police car that had the high performance to match. Step forward the Porsche Taycan, the all-electric saloon that blends supercar performance with the practicality a police car needs. The Taycan is not Dubai’s first police car: the force has previously employed a 918 Spyder on public service duties. Sadly, it wasn’t officially owned or operated by the Dutch police, nor used in patrols, pursuits, or law enforcement operations. But, from 1962 to 1996, the Dutch Rijkspolitie (state police) operated a fleet of Porsche 356, 911 and 914 sportscars for use on the Netherlands’ motorway network.',','Porsche 912 police carThis Porsche 912 was not only the first-ever Targa model produced by Porsche. It was the 100,000th car that Porsche built. It was donated to the German police force Photo: PorscheThe 100,000th Porsche ever built, the 912 Targa produced on 21 December 1966 was not just a milestone for the company, but also served as a working police car for the German Polizei. Delivered to the Baden-Württemberg police, the home region of Porsche, this special car was finished in classic green and white livery and fitted with features including a blue flashing light, radio equipment and a siren. The choice of a 912 Targa reflected both practicality and performance: its four-cylinder engine offered reliability and efficiency, while the Targa roof provided increased visibility and access for officers on patrol. Today, the car has been fully restored and is on display at the Porsche Museum in Stuttgart.Porsche 911 (type 993) police carPorsche police cars like this 911 (type 993), in the familiar green and white Polizei livery, were a common sight on Germany’s Autobahn for decades Photo: PorscheThe 993, the last of the air-cooled Porsche 911 sportscars, saw duty as a police car, most notably in Germany, where several were used by the Polizei during the 1990s. With high-speed performance and legendary reliability, it was well-suited for rapid-response patrols on the Autobahn. The one millionth Porsche ever produced was a 993. It rolled off the production line in 1999, and this particular example was put into service as a Porsche police car.Porsche 356 police carA gaggle of police officers surround a Porsche 356 Cabriolet. It’s believed that cabriolets were preferred to coupés as it allowed officers to easily stand and direct traffic from the safety of the car’s interior Photo: PorscheIn Germany, several 356 Coupés and Cabriolets were used by regional police forces. Fitted with basic police equipment like radios and sirens, these early patrol Porsches were often assigned to Autobahn duty. Their lightweight construction and agile handling gave officers an edge when responding to incidents or pursuing speeding vehicles. The Dutch Rijkspolitie began using the Porsche 356, particularly the cabriolet models, in its highway patrol division. They valued its visibility, speed and reliability. Officers could stand up through the roof to signal motorists, while the car’s manoeuvrability made it ideal for quick responses on busy motorways.A 1967 911 2.0 Targa, used by the Düsseldorf police force, circa 1968 Photo: Porsche',A 911 2.0 Targa, used by German police, in Baden-Württemberg in 1967 Photo: Porsche',Official photo of the Porsche Police Group of the Stuttgart police, standing in front of Solitude Palace on the group’s 10th anniversary Photo: Porsche',A 1972 911 T 2.4 Coupé owned by Stuttgart police Photo: Porsche',A line of 356 C Cabrio sportscars, bound for use by the Dutch police, awaiting delivering at the Porsche factory in Zuffenhausen in May 1966 Photo: Porsche'
