Gaming has long featured Porsche cars in the digital world. Now, Porsche is bringing that world into the car itself, rethinking how people spend time together on the road
Can you play games in a Porsche – and what makes it different from just playing on your phone?Yes. Selected models like the Cayenne Electric and Macan Electric offer in-car gaming via the Porsche App Center Games run on the car’s infotainment system, using touchscreen, Bluetooth controllers or smartphones For decades, Porsche has existed inside games. From racing simulators to open-world titles, generations of players have driven a 911 long before they ever saw one in real life. But for Porsche engineer Dr. Hiroki Watanabe, the next step was obvious.“We’ve seen Porsche cars in games for a long time,” he says. “Now we wanted to do the opposite.”That idea – bringing games into the car – meant rethinking the car not just as a place to drive, but somewhere to spend time.In the electric versions of the Cayenne and Macan, gaming is powered by a new generation of infotainment hardware, something Hiroki describes as the moment it finally became possible. It’s not just a mobile app transferred into the car,” says Hiroki. “We had to adapt it for the in-vehicle environment, with different requirements for in-car gaming.”In-car gamers can play using the car’s touchscreen displays, a Bluetooth controller or a smartphone Photo: PorschePlaying games in the car That power unlocks a range of experiences. Games from developers including Gameloft, Obscure Interactive and AirConsole are available through the Porsche App Center, spanning everything from racing and music-based gameplay to quick, social party games. You can play using the touchscreen, a Bluetooth controller, or even your smartphone. Some games work offline and multiplayer is possible. In fact, Porsche sees in-car gaming as a social experience. That thinking shapes how Porsche approaches gaming. In-car gaming Hiroki and his team had to overcome some technical challenges to make in-car gaming possible in a Macan Electric and Cayenne Electric. “We have different screen formats in the car, so we had to make sure the content is displayed correctly and not stretched when moving between screens. We also had to manage the Bluetooth controller so it is linked to the correct display. That was not straightforward,” he adds.“Latency and performance were also challenges and we had to make sure the experience feels smooth. Some partners already understood automotive restrictions, but others didn’t, so we had to guide them on what is possible in a car.”As for his personal in-car game of choice, Hiroki has a favourite genre. “Racing games,” he says, with a smile. Naturally, behind the virtual wheel of a 911 GT3 RS.Played on the Cayenne Electric’s large central display, with a controller in hand and high-end audio filling the cabin, it delivers something close to a familiar Porsche feeling.“You have your own space,” he says. “With the Cayenne Electric’s big central display, great sound from the high-end cabin speakers… it’s fantastic.”Porsche also integrated the game Fish of Zen, from Obscure Interactive, a startup studio based in the Stuttgart region. “We wanted to support a local gaming company,” says Hiroki. “And we welcome more opportunities to integrate additional game titles into the App Center.”Driver and passengers have access to a huge catalogue of games including familiar titles like Asphalt 9 and Who Wants To Be A Millionaire, depending on your country Photo: PorscheFAQsCan you play games in a Porsche?Yes.
