Timo Bernhard, Patrick Long, Earl Bamber – 3 of our work drivers, 3 Le Mans winners, 3 established names in long distance sports. But even they had to start small: together at the “Porsche Motorsport Junior Programme”.
By offering training to become professional motorsport racers, since 1997 Porsche has supported the young racing talent who have proven themselves as particularly successful in the Porsche One-Make-Series. In this way potential candidates are tested in a challenging test process based on lap times, technical and analytical understanding as well as physical and mental resistance. A tough road for young Pilots. But a road worth going down. Because the selected juniors will receive the ideal boost into their professional careers for a season in the Porsche Mobil 1 Supercup: a generous, financial subsidy and the professional care of Porsche AG specialists.
In detail: teaching plans for increasing their personal performance and driving coaches who don’t just accompany them on every race weekend but also improve their driving behaviour with the help of data analysis. Other elements of the training: teaching units on the right way to handle the media, workshops on core technical areas and their first assignments at factory and customer events. An integrated development process that will make mature Porsche Pilots out of young athletes. Successfully. Because every one of the 21 juniors we have supported so far has made the leap into a professional career.
An exceptional example: the French 18 year old Julien Andlauer. Since the start of 2018 he has stirred up the field around the Porsche Mobil 1 Supercup as a Porsche junior. And now he has achieved the unprecedented: together with the team from Dempsey-Proton racing, he won the legendary 24 hours of Le Mans as the youngest ever class winner. A childhood dream that began when he was 6 years old on his father’s go-kart track - a dream that is now reality. More proof that we don’t just work on the sports cars of the future. We also concentrate on the drivers of tomorrow.
