Porsche succeeds 2006 with a new record in North AmericaWorld premiere of the new Cayenne with more efficient engines at the Detroit Motor Show
Stuttgart. Dr. Ing. h.c. F. Porsche AG, Stuttgart, has again set a new sales record in North America in the 2006 calendar year. With
36,095 vehicles delivered, the manufacturer of sporty, premium vehicles beat its record for the previous year (33,859 units) by seven percent. This growth was driven by the sports cars. This many 911 model series vehicles have never been sold before in the US and Canada in a calendar year: the new 911 Turbo, which was launched on the North American market in July 2006, also contributed 1,243 units to the
19% increase to a total of 12,702 deliveries. However, the highest growth rates were recorded for the Boxster model series with growth of 46%
to 12,163; 7,313 of these units were Cayman models. As a result of lifecycle factors, deliveries of the Cayenne declined by 23% to
11,141 vehicles. March 3, 2007 will see the sales start for the new generation of the sporty all-terrain Cayenne in the US and Canada.
Porsche was not only highly successful in North America in 2006 as a whole, but also did extremely well in the last month of the year. At
2,947, vehicle sales in December were even slightly higher than the previous year's high figure of 2,944, in spite of the difficult market environment. Deliveries of the 911 rose by 22% to 1,164 vehicles. The Boxster model series accelerated by 68% to 811 units; 535 of which were Cayman models. While sales of the Cayenne dropped by 35% to
969 vehicles, deliveries of the first generation remained close to the 1,000 mark – still a high level – even at the end of its lifecycle. It should also be noted that Porsche is still refusing to boost plant sales with discounts, even though competition on the North American market is partly characterized by extremely high price concessions.
In the coming months, Porsche is anticipating that the launch of the new Cayenne will provide additional stimulus. The second generation models are celebrating their world premier at the Detroit Motor Show, which will be opening its doors next week. Thanks to the newly developed engines with gasoline direct injection, the new Cayenne stands out with its greater performance coupled with lower fuel consumption. Savings of up to 15% are possible in real driving conditions. In future, the basic version of the sporty all-terrain vehicle will be powered by a 290 HP (213 kW) six-cylinder engine. With its larger, 4.8 liter, naturally aspirated V8 engine, the Cayenne S will have an output of 385 HP (283 kW). The eight-cylinder engine of the Cayenne Turbo, with its two exhaust gas turbochargers, will have an engine output of 500 HP (368 kW).
