Porsche unveils PPE technology for the first time, demonstrating brand strengths with the all-electric Macan Porsche’s progress in electrification development

Shanghai/Stuttgart. Porsche has always been about building sports cars. Looking into the electrified future, Porsche, in keeping with its sporty DNA, is advancing its technology along two parallel paths: race cars and road sports cars.

• Born on the racetrack, Porsche sees its birthplace as the most demanding platform for technology development. The Mission R clearly showcases Porsche’s vision of the future of all-electric GT race cars.

Latest progress: Porsche’s testing prototype, the 718 Cayman GT4 e-Performance, is currently on a worldwide tour to fully test this innovative racing concept – on the one hand, the tour aims to verify the potential of the technology and on the other hand, to explore the possibilities of its racing formats in the future, with a dedication to opening up future racing fields where drivers and fans can share their motorsport passion in the all-electric era.

• Out on the streets, Porsche is committed to putting reliable technical innovations into se-ries production, thus bringing its sports car genes to life with all-electric driving pleasure. In 2019, with the brand’s first all-electric model, the Taycan, from the J1 platform, Porsche set the benchmark for all-electric sports cars. Next, Porsche will launch its second all-electric model, the all-electric Macan, based on the new Premium Platform Electric (PPE) development platform.

Latest progress: The development targets of the all-electric Macan include reproducible best-in-class performance values, reliable range and fast-charging. While combining the benefits of the platform, Porsche is fully emphasising its uniqueness. With its 800-volt ar-chitecture, the powerful electric motor from the latest generation, and state-of-the-art bat-tery and charge management, the all-electric Macan ensures an uncompromising Porsche driving experience.

PPE: the development platform for all-electric Macan

As one of the platforms used by Porsche for the development of all-electric vehicles, PPE pro-vides many benefits in many ways – in terms of package and spaciousness, for example. At the same time, the architecture offers such ample room for manoeuvring – in the wheelbase, track width and ground clearance – that it can be used in a variety of models, including in dif-ferent segments, rear- and all-wheel drive and at various performance levels. This simultane-ously allows for the flexibility which enables Porsche models to retain their strong, independ-ent character.

All-electric Macan: based on the platform’s benefits, emphasising Porsche’s technical independence and characteristic experience

• 800 V powertrain: The advantages of 800-volt architecture are consistent high perfor-mance, reduced charging time, and lower weight and space-requirements for the high-voltage cables. The permanently excited synchronous electric motors (PSM) with hairpin winding offer higher power and torque densities, greater efficiency and better reproducibil-ity of the power output. All those technologies, already highly appreciated in the all-electric sports car Taycan, will be applied to the all-electric Macan, and have taken a step forward. Examples of these improvements and optimisations include the water jacket cooling and the power electronics. As a result, the power density and effectiveness have become even stronger.

• Charged from five to 80 percent charged in less than 25 minutes: All electric Macan models have a lithium-ion battery with a total capacity of around 100 kWh, with high ener-gy density. Thanks to the 800-volt technology, the battery can be charged with an even higher charging capacity than the 270 kW of the Taycan. The ‘bank charging’ used for the first time makes the all-electric Macan fit the 400 V charging pile even better. The way the electronic components are packaged is also innovative: Porsche has applied for a patent for its Integrated Power Box which, in addition to the reduced cable requirements and weight, also saves space.

• Performance rear axle: The all-electric Macan will have an all-wheel concept with one electric motor per axle. The rear e-motor is positioned particularly far back, resulting in a slightly rear-focused weight balance with the ratio of 48 to 52 per cent. The rear-axle steering – the first of its kind on a model in this class – combines with the dynamic torque distribution of the all-wheel drive, ensuring the agility of the powerful electric motors on the rear axle when accelerating out of a bend. To accommodate this, the wheel width on the front and rear axles will differ significantly for better grip and driving dynamics, thus con-tributing further to the performance potential.

• A brand-new double wishbone axle: The all-electric Macan will have a completely re-vised double wishbone axle with detached strut level at the front, enabling improved re-sponsiveness, steering precision and straight-line driving. The multi-link axle at the rear is connected to the body via an elastically mounted sub-frame, while the rear electric drive unit is fastened directly to the structure at four points, which has a positive effect on the driving dynamics with precise wheel guidance and high transverse rigidity, and on the NVH (Noise, Vibration, Harshness) behaviour.

Porsche Torque Vectoring Plus: The top versions of the all-electric Macan will come with the electronically controlled differential lock on the rear axle as standard. This control strategy is independent of the respective driving situation and ensures greater traction, driving stability and transverse dynamics. The steering behaviour and precision are supported by targeted dynamic braking interventions on the rear axle.

Porsche Traction Management (PTM): This system makes use of the conceptual ad-vantages of the all-electric powertrain. That is, an all-wheel concept. Depending on the driving programme selected and the respective driving situation, the two electric motors enable demand-based torque distribution between the front and rear axles. This is benefi-cial to the steerability and the directional control of the front axle on the one hand, and on the other to the traction, forming the basis for the characteristic, highly agile Porsche han-dling. Even away from paved roads, the Macan benefits from the optimised all-wheel dis-tribution of the electronically controlled all-wheel drive.

Porsche Active Suspension Management (PASM): The two-valve shock absorbers will be a new feature in the PASM of the all-electric Macan. On the one hand, they offer im-proved performance due to a significantly greater damper characteristic spread. On the other, two-valve shock absorbers can be adjusted independently of each other, providing an appreciable increase in comfort. This versatility makes the differences between the driving programmes even more tangible, putting each individual driving programme in the future Macan on its own distinct level.

718 Cayman GT4 e-Performance: a testing prototype based on the Mission R to explore the future all-electric GT racing car for customer motorsport

The Mission R concept study, unveiled at the 2021 IAA Mobility in Munich, has outlined the vision of an all-electric GT racing car for customer motorsport in the future. Following its public premiere at the Goodwood Festival of Speed, the Mission R’s testing prototype – the 718 Cayman GT4 e-Performance – is now on a world tour. The car will be participating in different kinds of events, to test all the innovative technology concepts housed within. With the help of the test tour, Porsche aims to gather market intelligence around the word, and also to explore the potential of the associated racing formats.

• High-performance power output, 900 V and direct oil cooling: The entire electric mo-tor and battery technology comes from the Mission R, with different modes. In qualification mode, the maximum output can reach up to 800 kW (1,088 PS). In simulated racing, a steady 450 kW (612 PS) is available for 30 minutes – the duration of a Porsche Carrera Cup race. The direct oil cooling and avoided thermal derating contribute to its constant high performance throughout the whole run. In terms of lap times and top speed, the 718 Cayman GT4 e-Performance is on par with the performance of the current 992-generation 911 GT3 Cup. Thanks to 900-volt technology, the state of charge (SoC) of the battery at full charging capacity jumps from 5 to 80 per cent in about 15 minutes. The GT4 e-Performance has a fully adjustable all-wheel drive that recuperates on both axes, which leads to a recuperation ratio of up to 50%, a further benefit to energy efficiency.

• High voltage safety concept and crash management: GT4 e-Performance follows the same regulations and rules as our series production cars. This means that in the event of a collision, the battery connections to the vehicle and the high voltage consumers are au-tomatically disconnected to ensure no voltage is present. This concept is also standard in Formula E.

• Sustainable materials: This is another highlight of the Mission R concept study. The nat-ural fibre composite materials of the doors are made of flax. Recycled carbon fibres are also used for testing purposes. The tires are specially made by Michelin for this car and they contain 53% recycled material. Additionally, spike tires and hill climb tires are al-so available in a sustainable version.

• Aerodynamics: To reduce drag, the car has no outside mirrors, but cameras beneath the louvres, while the inside mirror of the car has been replaced by screens.

Oliver Schwab, Project Manager GT4 e-Performance Demo Tour, said: “It is always very im-portant that motorsport remains relevant to the future. So we want to bring electrification into customer racing and establish it. We do all of this in order to make sure that, besides devel-oping a successful racing car, we develop a successful racing platform for our customers.”
