Selection criteria updated to the voice of the times
2024-2025 Porsche “Young Chinese Artist of the Year”is open to Chinese young artists under the age of 40, with no restrictions on creative medium. Building upon the rigorous evaluation mechanism of previous editions, the new selection has introduced three new mechanisms aimed at further broadening the selection opportunities and development space for participants. In terms of nomination review criteria, a new dimension has been added—artists should continuously explore diverse artistic expressions and experiences, innovating artistic interpretations within new contexts. This criterion broadens the choices for the artists to present their works, and encourages more young artists to boldly express their forward-looking ideas from a new era perspective and no longer remain limited to fixed tones of creative forms and artistic development.
In the 2024-2025 Porsche "Young Chinese Artist of the Year" event, the number of nominees has been increased. Serving as the leading body of the selection, the Executive Committee has been granted nomination privileges. Jojo Tang, Kylie Ying, and Shen Qilan, three members of the Executive Committee, now hold the authority to nominate artists for consideration. Moreover, this year marks the first time media judges have been invited to participate in the nomination voting process. Representing a public perspective, these media professionals will provide valuable insights from their expertise to ensure a fair and objective selection of outstanding artistic works.
Focusing on the development of youth and the future of art
2024-2025 Porsche “Young Chinese Artist of the Year” includes three stages: nomination, nominees’exhibition and winners' exhibition. During the initial phase of the selection process, 14 nomination committee members will individually recommend candidate artists for consideration based on the selection criteria. Subsequently, the jury committee will vote to select the shortlisted artists. In November of this year, a dedicated group exhibition featuring the nominated artists will be held. During this period, the jury committee will evaluate the nominated artworks based on conceptualisation, innovative forms, creative approaches, and other criteria, ultimately selecting 1 to 4 award-winning artists. It is anticipated that the winners’ exhibition will be held in the first half of 2025.
2024-2025 Porsche “Young Chinese Artist of the Year” is honored to receive generous support from the Simian Foundation, established by Wang Simian. The foundation has decided to further increase the funding amount for the winners on top of the original prize, aiming to inspire young talents to continuously pursue excellence in their artistic endeavors and reach new heights. The support from the Simian Foundation underscores high recognition for the Porsche “Young Chinese Artist of the Year” event and demonstrates a profound sense of responsibility and commitment to the contemporary art scene in China.
As one of the core practices of Porsche's “Empowering the Future” corporate social responsibility programme, the Porsche “Young Chinese Artist of the Year” programme continuously improves its selection mechanism and provides opportunities for young talents to develop and exchange. Since its inaugural selection in 2017, more than 60 emerging artists have been nominated, and 13 artists have won awards due to their outstanding professional abilities, including Wu Junyong, Yao Qingmei, Zhang Ding, Chen Baoyang, Liu Wa, Liu Xinyi, Miao Ying, Guo Cheng, Liu Xin, Wang Yi, Li Hanwei, Li Ming, and Tong Wenmin (in chronological order of awards and last names). In the future, Porsche will continue to cultivate a system for the development of young artistic talents, providing a stage for more emerging artists to realise their potential and steadfastly fulfill their commitment to corporate social responsibility.
