Good Practices for Waste Prevention

By adopting best practices and exploring opportunities for battery reuse and recycling, end users can contribute significantly to waste prevention. These actions help extend battery lifespan, reduce the demand for new batteries, and minimize environmental impacts.

Proper Use and Care of Batteries
To maximize the lifespan of batteries, it is important to follow recommended usage guidelines. For portable batteries, this includes avoiding extreme temperatures, preventing exposure to moisture, and storing them in a cool, dry place, as well as regularly cleaning battery contacts. For traction and starter batteries, refer to the specific owner’s manual of your vehicle for detailed information on proper usage and care.

Optimized Charging
Proper charging can greatly extend battery life. Follow manufacturer’s instructions regarding charging times and methods, and avoid overcharging, as it can impair battery capacity. Using the correct charger and preventing charging interruptions help maintain battery performance. Further charging instructions for traction and starter batteries can be found in the corresponding owner’s manual of your vehicle.

Exploration of Reuse Opportunities
End users should actively seek ways to extend battery usage, such as repurposing rechargeable portable batteries for compatible devices. For information on reuse possibilities for traction or starter batteries, end customers can contact a Porsche Partner or a qualified third-party provider.

Proper Disposal and Recycling

Improper disposal of waste batteries can harm the environment and human health due to the hazardous materials they contain. Both non-rechargeable and rechargeable batteries hold valuable raw materials that can be recycled and reused.

To ensure proper treatment and recycling, end users are legally required to dispose of waste batteries separately from other types of waste. Designated collection points or recycling systems are available where waste batteries can be deposited safely and free of charge. End users should make use of these facilities to ensure responsible disposal and promote the recovery of valuable materials from batteries. This also applies to batteries that are incorporated in devices and can be easily removed by the end user.

Taking waste batteries back from the end-users free of charge involves covering the following costs as the producer:

Costs for the separate collection of waste batteries, including transportation and treatment, accounting for any revenue from preparation for reuse or repurposing, as well as the value of secondary raw materials recovered from recycled waste batteries.

Costs related to analyzing the composition of mixed municipal waste to assess the quantity of waste batteries improperly disposed of in general waste.

Costs of distributing important information on the prevention and management of waste batteries to all relevant parties.

Costs for gathering and submitting required information to the competent authorities.

Separate Collection Symbol

The symbol of the crossed-out waste bin means that batteries must not be disposed of in municipal waste, instead they must be returned to separate collection points.
When batteries are disposed of in municipal waste, they can end up in landfills, where toxic substances can leach into the soil and groundwater.

Cadmium and Lead Symbols

The chemical symbol for cadmium, "Cd," indicates that a battery contains more than 0.002% cadmium, while the chemical symbol for lead, "Pb," signifies a lead content of over 0.004% lead. Both values indicate an exceedance of these established thresholds. The symbols are often located beneath the crossed-out waste bin.

Impact of Batteries on Human Health and the Environment

Batteries may contain toxic chemicals or metals that can contaminate water supplies and ecosystems.

Mechanical, thermal, or electrical stresses (e.g., impacts, heat, cold, incorrect charging, or short circuits) can damage the battery and lead to the following consequences:

Leakage of corrosive liquids, which can cause skin irritation, burns, and chemical burns.

Increased fire hazard due to leakage of flammable electrolytes.

Release of toxic substances or combustion products in the event of a fire.

Reactions with other materials, resulting in the release of flammable or toxic gases.

Protective Measures and Handling Recommendations for End Users

Batteries can be safely used according to the manufacturer's recommendations.

General Safety Instructions for Handling:

Do not perform any repair or maintenance work on batteries. Do not open or modify the battery.

Avoid contact between battery terminals and hands, tools, jewelry, or other conductive objects.

Do not expose batteries directly and permanently to high temperatures or liquids, as this can lead to short circuits, electric shocks, burns, and explosions. Store batteries in a cool, dry place.

Use only manufacturer-approved chargers to avoid overcharging and excessive charging voltages.

Regularly inspect batteries, as far as accessible, for possible damage.

If you notice signs of smoke, heat, odors, unusual noises, or deformation in portable batteries, immediately disconnect the battery from the device, if safe to do so, call the fire department, and store the battery in a safe location (e.g., in a fireproof container or at a safe distance from flammable materials), maintaining a safe distance from the battery.

If you observe smoke, heat, odors, or unusual noises from your traction or starter battery, or if a red warning light on the vehicle display indicates a critical battery defect, immediately park the vehicle safely, turn it off, exit the vehicle, and promptly contact roadside assistance or the fire department. Maintain a safe distance from the vehicle and do not attempt to take any actions on the battery yourself.

Dispose of defective batteries immediately and properly.

Larger lithium batteries may only be handled by authorized and trained personnel in accordance with the manufacturer's operating instructions and safety data sheet.

Emergency Procedures

Spilled Liquids

Avoid contact with spilled liquids.

Protect your skin; wipe up the liquid with a dry and absorbent cloth or use another absorbent material (e.g., dry sand, vermiculite, sawdust, or specialized binders). Dispose of the absorbed material separately from other waste types at waste collection facilities in accordance with national regulations and the manufacturer’s recommendations.

Do not allow the liquid to reach the ground or surface water.


In Case of Fire, Smoke, Heat, or Dangerous Battery Conditions

Call the fire department.

Leave the area immediately and inform others.

For extinguishing fires involving lead-acid batteries, use a dry powder extinguisher, a water spray, or foam. If the fire involves lithium batteries, use a dry powder extinguisher, CO₂, a water spray, or foam. Never use a water jet.


In the Event of an Accident / First Aid

In case of eye injuries caused by battery electrolyte or acid, rinse your eyes immediately for at least 15 minutes with water and seek medical attention without delay.

In case of skin contact, thoroughly clean the affected area with sufficient water and soap.
