The restoration process

Cost estimate

The Porsche Classic specialists use photos to come up with an initial rough cost estimate for the restoration work. If there is still interest after receiving the estimate, the vehicle will be inspected in the Porsche Classic workshop. At the customer's request, Porsche Classic can also organise for the vehicle to be transported door-to-door in collaboration with globally proven logistics partners. In the workshop, the experts then assess the financial outlay as precisely as possible. Each area is estimated separately: engine, transmission, electrics, chassis, bodyshell, paintwork and interior.

The experts and the customer take a close look at the vehicle. The entire scope of the work is discussed and defined together on-site in Stuttgart.

Disassembly

For a complete restoration, the vehicle is completely disassembled and all parts, from the engine through to the interior, are removed from the bodyshell. Once the specialists have removed the worst corrosion from the bodyshell, they open all the cavities – a necessary preparation for removing all paint in a chemical paint removal bath. Afterwards, the condition of the classic car can be clearly determined. The initial rough cost estimate can now be reviewed, if necessary.

Engine and transmission

To ensure everything runs smoothly, the function and authenticity of the engine and transmission must be carefully checked. If necessary, both of these are completely disassembled and cleaned. Defective components are replaced with genuine parts or parts that have been reproduced based on original drawings. The engine settings are applied based on the measurements originally specified by the factory. The engine's performance is then determined, visualised and documented in a test run. This procedure ensure that the engine and transmission are restored to their original condition – from both a visual and a technical perspective.

Bodyshell

On the straightening bench, original frame gauges specially designed for doors and windows were used to precisely measure the chassis. Where necessary, experienced mechanics bend deformed areas back into shape. Extremely corroded areas are cut out and replaced with new genuine parts. In a meticulous "trial assembly" process, the untreated bodyshell is fully assembled on the straightening bench. Gap dimensions and functions are checked and optimised. The parts are then removed again for further processing by our experts.

CDC and paintwork

The classic car didn't even look this good when it was brand new. Today, the bodyshell benefits from cathodic dip coating (CDC). The CDC bath, as it is known, guarantees even priming in every nook and cranny. Epoxy resin dissolved in water produces conductive paint. A DC voltage is generated by submerging an anode along with the bodyshell, which acts as a cathode. Paint particles adhere evenly and securely to the bodyshell, including in all cavities, and offer a high level of protection against corrosion. Then begins the work to apply the full paint structure in the original colour.

Interior

Where you feel at home: The experts will now turn solely to matters of taste. When it comes to the interior, it truly is a matter of the heart. Specialists can treat it or completely renovate it. With original-quality materials.

Completion

Ready for the road: The Porsche classic has been restored to its original condition. Just like new. But not quite ready to go back to its owner. Several experts check the function of the engine and transmission on extensive test drives, listen for wind noise, and take another close look at the chassis and paintwork. Only when the specialists are satisfied can the customer take delivery of their valuable companion.

Documentation

When the vehicle is returned, not only does the customer get their valuable companion back, they also receive a high-quality restoration presentation box, which includes a book containing the complete documentation of the work carried out on their vehicle, a USB Stick with around 1,000 photos and a certificate with a badge. As a special homage to the vintage car, the paintwork of the box is the same as that of the customer's classic Porsche, while the lid matches the interior of their vehicle.
