Enjoy this superb driving tour of South Africa, a captivating country of dramatic mountains and endless sandy beaches. Its dreamy vineyards give way to vibrant, modern cities. It is also famous as a meeting place for some of the most diverse cultures in the world. Western Cape province is a land of fascinating extremes. It also provides the perfect setting for an adventure tour featuring a car that incorporates some extremes of its own: the Porsche Cayenne. Cape Town is an ideal base from which to explore this unspoilt wilderness. Before crossing the Baviaanskloof (‘Baboon’s Gorge’) nature reserve, you can learn all about off-road driving – sometimes on stretches of road used by the Porsche test drivers themselves. Continue along the legendary wine route to Cape Agulhas, where the Atlantic and Indian Oceans meet, before returning to the inviting city of Cape Town set against the backdrop of the majestic Table Mountain.
Early morning arrival in Cape Town, followed by an approx. 40-minute journey by shuttle bus to Stellenbosch. This remote town on the banks of the River Eerste was founded by Dutch settlers in around 1680. After arrival at the Lanzerac Hotel set in a 300-year-old converted manor house, you will be introduced to your vehicle for the tour, the Porsche Cayenne, and given a brief introduction to the days ahead.
Today, you will explore the exceptional offroad capability of the CayenToday, you will explore the exceptional off-road capability of the Cayenne with an intensive practice session at the nearby Klipbokkop Mountain Resort, home to one of the most demanding off-road trails in South Africa. Break for lunch before putting everything you have learned into practice in the breathtaking surroundings of the Stettyn Mountains. Spend the night out in the wilds at Camp Klipbokkop.
On the third day, you’ll leave the wilderness behind and follow Route 62 through a diverse landscape of mountain passes, fruit farms and vineyards. In the evening, sample some of the exquisite port and Muscat wines for which the region is famous before retiring to your room at the Alte Landhaus Schoemanshoek on the wine route.
The whole day is dedicated to exploring South Africa’s beautiful scenery. The trip over the Swartberg Pass takes you through a number of rugged rock formations. After a day in the mountains, head for Plettenberg Bay and your hotel for the night, the Tsala Treetop Lodge. It was not far from here that Vasco da Gama found land in 1497, although his journey here was no doubt slightly less enjoyable.
As well as satisfying your taste for adventure, the day tour to Baviaanskloof ('Baboon’s Gorge') is an opportunity to demonstrate your skills in the Cayenne. The route runs along narrow mountain tracks through the Baviaanskloof Mountains. Part of a nature reserve covering an area of approx. 218,000 hectares, this is the ideal terrain for the Cayenne and a chance to experience South Africa’s rich flora and fauna close-up. Arrive in Plettenberg Bay, where you will spend the night.
Travel to Cape Agulhas (Africa’s southernmost tip and the official point of division between the Atlantic and Indian Oceans) and then on to Hermanus where it is sometimes possible to spot whales at this time of year. In the evening, you are free to relax on the picturesque beach or visit one of the famous wine taverns.
Spend the day relaxing and enjoying the incredible combination of mountains and secluded beaches. Leave Hermanus in the Cayenne, driving along the panoramic coastal road through Pringle Bay and Gordonsbay to the starting point of your tour, the Lanzerac Hotel in Stellenbosch. In the evening, a shuttle bus will take you back to Cape Town where you are invited to a formal dinner before spending your final night at a hotel in the city.
On a guided tour, explore the many facets of Cape Town – a glorious blend of Cape-Dutch, Victorian, Gregorian and Art Deco architecture. Stop off at the Cape of Good Hope to visit a penguin colony before spending the night in Cape Town.
