The winners from the 2012 Porsche Carrera Cup GB and Porsche GT3 Cup Challenge GB were celebrated during the annual awards evening at the Whittlebury Hall Hotel on Saturday (10 November 2012).
Over 250 guests were there to applaud the winners from the 2012 season as overall champions Michael Meadows and James Birch won the major prizes. Carrera Cup champion Meadows and GT3 Cup Challenge champion Birch were among four winners to take away road-going Porsches as part of their prize package. Meadows, Ahmad Al Harthy (Pro-Am1 champion) and Simon Leonard (from team champions Redline Racing) all drove away in brand new 911s, while Birch took a Boxster S as his prize. All four winners will have the use of their cars for a year.
Other drivers to collect a share of over £60,000 in end-of-season prize money included Ben Barker, Sam Tordoff, Derek Pierce, Oly Mortimer and Will Goff from the Carrera Cup GB. Meanwhile, Steven Liquorish, Justin Sherwood, Tom Hallissey and Mark Cowne were all applauded for their success in the GT3 Cup Challenge.
“It’s been a privilege to be part of a great series: the other guys are world class,” said Carrera Cup runner-up Barker. Meadows, meanwhile, started the evening by receiving a congratulatory text from Michael Schumacher, a connection established through Michael’s family links with Formula 1. The new champion is already working hard on his plans for 2013. “The plan is to do the Porsche Supercup: we’re working hard and hopefully we’ll be there,” he reported. Meanwhile, GT3 Cup Challenge Birch is working towards graduating to the Carrera Cup next season.
The final major award of the year was the Carrera Cup’s ‘most improved driver of the season’ which went to Rory Butcher. The young Scot missed the awards evening as he was busy on his stag night, but sent a message of thanks. “It’s been a fantastic year and I’m really chuffed to win this award,” he said. “My thanks go to Celtic Speed, Tommy Dreelan and my sponsors.”
