The turbo version of the 993, which was equipped with all-wheel drive for the first time, featured a number of exclusive details: two turbochargers, a larger charge air cooler, electronic boost pressure control, hot-film mass air flow sensor, exhaust monitoring system, new brake system, aluminium hollow spoke wheels and powerful Litronic dipped-beam headlights.
The flat-six engine of the Porsche 911 Turbo was based on the air-cooled 3.6-litre engine of the 911 Carrera and generated 300 kW (408 hp) at 5,570 rpm. The turbocharging was enhanced by Porsche. Behind the air flow sensor, the intake air is separated and flows into the left and right turbochargers. In the new generation of turbos, the compressed component currents enter into separate charge air coolers which are optimised for pressure loss. The separation into two component streams made small turbochargers with low mass moments of inertia possible, which significantly improved responsiveness compared to an engine of similar power with a turbocharger.
The innovative, intelligent all-wheel turbo combined outstanding agility with optimum handling and problem-free day-to-day usability. The vehicle's active and passive safety standards and measures to reduce pollutants were exemplary.
