Porsche Mobil 1 Supercup comes to Monaco: from the ring to the racetrack.
"Clear the ring" for a really special race event. The Porsche Mobil 1 Supercup comes to Monaco once a year. This top-ranking Porsche One-Make-Series is held as part of the Formula 1 weekend in Monte Carlo, with 28 drivers from all over the world.
The special feature here is that the drivers‘ paddock is set up in the permanent Chapiteau l‘Espace de Fontvieille big top. In the converted ring, the mechanics work under the circus spotlights on the 460 hp Porsche 911 GT3 Cup cars, which are the same for all drivers.
From there they take an unusual route to the racetrack. Out of the circus tent and past the heliport behind. High-rise apartment blocks edge the road. The drive continues past sea and yachts and over public roads until the Avenue des Guelfes disappears into a tunnel. Strung out like pearls on a string, 28 Porsche race cars raucous in the dark.
Strip lights stretch across the rough-hewn stone. Inside the tunnel, the background noise is like being at a hard rock festival in front of the speaker. The race car engines boom and the sound is thrown back from the tunnel walls. “As a racing driver, for me, this sound confirms that you are properly pushing yourself. The feeling is so concentrated that you can sense the tension in every cell of your body,” explains Porsche Junior Sven Müller.
At every gear change, small flames explode out of the tailpipe. A police escort drives through the convoy beneath the street canyons of Monaco.
The accompanying vehicles, carrying tyres and tools to the pit lanes, are packed full of people and equipment. The Porsche Cayennes carrying impact wrenches and hex nuts. A mixture of happy anticipation and tension puts a stop to any conversation. When the tunnel opens out again, you automatically squint. Gleaming sunlight hits the drivers and teams. The first drivers see the famous Rascasse corner. Goosebumps appear. “There it is: the racetrack that doesn’t forgive any mistakes and whose crash barriers have already destroyed so many dreams. You want to conquer it and stand in the royal box as the winner,“ says Sven Müller. It is with this thought in mind that Müller drives into the starting position and gets ready for the race.
Where the Formula 1 gladiators drove through the pit lane just a short time ago, the Porsche Mobil 1 Supercup is now getting ready to start. The team managers are giving final instructions, a camera crew is filming the preparations. The light at the end of the pit lane is red, but the race is about to start. When the lights turn green the racing drivers‘ dream comes true. The cars surge onto one of the most famous racetracks in the world: Monaco!
