The figures alone speak for themselves. The number of exhibitors at the show increased from 820 to 850 this year. The display area of 110,000m2 was also considerably larger than last year (85,000m2) and even the impressive attendance figures of 109,000 for the previous year were far exceeded: organisers counted 129,000 visitors this year – a new record.
The huge crowd of classic car enthusiasts was particularly evident at the Porsche stand in the new Hall 3. Several rows of Porsche fans thronged the Porsche Classic stand, where they could avail of an opportunity to buy a limited-edition special model and also pick up some recently published Porsche literature. The booklet entitled "Types, dimensions, tolerances" and driver's manuals for the classic Porsche models were clearly among the most sought-after items. Parts catalogues, parts CDs and workshop manuals were also very popular. And despite all this hectic activity, the Porsche Classic employees still took the time to exhaustively answer questions on the topic of spare parts.
Only a few feet away, the living workshop, as it was called, guaranteed an informative and fascinating look behind the scenes of the Porsche spare part production process. With impressive dexterity, Sabine Dorigo and Wilhelm Wagner demonstrated how interior parts such as sun visors or backrests are covered with leather. Those wishing to know more about the restoration of classic Porsche models were placed in the capable hands of employees from the Porsche Exclusive and Classic Centre, as they maintain, repair and restore historic Porsche models in Factory 1 (Werk 1) in Stuttgart-Zuffenhausen.
The Classic Clubs of course played an important role at the Porsche stand, where they were each represented by a display car. The Club for the Classic Porsche 911 (Club für den klassischen Porsche 911), the Carrera RS Owners Club, the Porsche 914-6 Club, the VW-Porsche 914 Deutschland Club, the Porsche Club 928, the 924/944 Club Deutschland and Porsche Club 968 Deutschland provided numerous interested onlookers with information on their activities and many visitors signed up there and then for membership. The Porsche 356 Club Deutschland chose not to display a car for the benefit of the Porsche Diesel Club Europe and so, for the first time ever, a tractor graced the stand. The perfectly restored Diesel Junior V quickly became a hit, competing with a 911 Carrera RSR Turbo 2.1 litre from the Porsche Werksmuseum as the most frequently photographed object. A contemporary Turbo Cabrio acted as the link to modern times, also demonstrating the options available under the Exclusive program for customising a Porsche.There was plenty on offer at Essen and anyone who wasn't there certainly missed out – except for one thing: the literature sold at the show by Porsche Classic is also available from all Porsche Centres.
