110 years of the Solitude Race. There was plenty to celebrate at the Solitude Revival 2013, including the return to historic locations such as the start and finish tower, pit lane and paddock. For the first time, the complete historic ensemble of Solitude racing history and the entire Solitude Ring circuit were combined in a single meeting.
From July 19th to 21st at the Solitude race track – Southern Germany’s oldest motor sports track – fans of classic motor sports enjoyed an exciting event with many racing classics. The starting field of around 300 vehicles was an impressive sight. The line-up included many original vehicles which had raced on the Solitude track 50 years ago or more.
The race track’s 110th birthday festivities began on the Friday when all the participants showcased their vehicles in a short sprint on the starting and finishing straights at the Glemseck. At the grand opening on the Saturday, visitors were free to admire all the racing car groups, a procession of classic road cars and a demonstration of special racing cars. The real highlight of the event was on the Sunday with the Solitude Revival Grand Prix where each racing car group did five non-stop laps of the track.
Porsche was a regular visitor to the legendary Solitude Ring on the outskirts of its home town of Stuttgart, which in its day was just as known worldwide as the Nürburgring, and has secured more victories at Solitude than any other marque. For Porsche, this was reason enough to take part in the anniversary event celebrating “110 years of the Solitude Race”.
Porsche Classic was in attendance right beside the starting and finishing straights with two models that are steeped in history. The Porsche Classic workshop showcased the legendary Monte Carlo Rally car, a 911 2.0 Coupé from 1965. The specialists from Porsche Classic have only just begun the very special task of restoring this extraordinary racing car. Also on site was a Porsche 356 B Super 90 Coupé from 1963, which is also currently being restored in the Porsche Classic workshop. On the Porsche Exclusive & Tequipment stand, six exhibition vehicles provided an insight into the extensive personalisation portfolio available for contemporary Porsche models. A 911 Carrera S Cabrio and a Carrera 4S Coupé, among other models, demonstrated how the sportiness of the 911 can be further enhanced with the Exclusive power kit, SportDesign package and Aerokit Cup options. Another highlight in the Porsche area was a second generation Panamera, its sporty elegance underlined by optional extras such as painted rims and an exclusive interior.
In addition to the vehicles on show, our experts from the Porsche Customer Centre were on hand to answer visitors’ questions. Classic specialists at the Porsche Classic stand information on the availability of Porsche Genuine Spare Parts and on the maintenance and restoration of classic vehicles. Experts from Porsche Exclusive & Tequipment were also in attendance, providing information about the numerous personalisation options available direct from the factory and the accessory products for the subsequent enhancement and care of Porsche vehicles. The Porsche line-up at the starting and finishing straights was rounded off by the event truck of Porsche Driver’s Selection by Porsche Design, which boasted a selection of lifestyle articles, clothing and small leather items along with a large array of superbly detailed model cars.
The Porsche Museum was there too, with the museum shop and eight highlight vehicles in the drivers’ paddock. For example, visitors were able to admire the type 718 Formula 2, the 718 RS 60 Spyder, the 356 B 1600 Abarth, the 356 B “Dreikantschaber” (Wedge Blade), and a Porsche 911 2.0 (model year 1967). Behind the wheel of these particular cars for this year’s circuit at the Glemseck were Kurt Ahrens, Hans Hermann, Marc Lieb, Eberhard Mahle and Matthias Müller, among others.
