In 2005, Porsche completely redeveloped the RS Spyder to be consistent with the LMP2 regulations (Le Mans Prototype 2).The aim of the authors of the regulations for this category is to give private teams a platform for high-class motor sports prototypes. This enables Porsche to continue with its successful customer sport programme at a high level.
In the 2006 season, the RS Spyder started in the ALMS exclusively with the Penske Motorsports team and won almost every achievable title in its first full racing season: the driver, team and manufacturer’s championships. In the 2007 season, two additional RS Spyders were deployed by Dyson Racing alongside the Penske team and Porsche was able to defend the title in all three categories.
This run of victories continued in the 2008 season: Porsche won the manufacturer, team and driver championships for the third time in a row. And the historic 18th overall victory in the 12 Hours of Sebring at the very start of the season was a particular highlight.
