The 911 GT3 RSR (997) is the product of continuous development which began with the introduction of the 911 GT3 R (996) in 1999. Since then this racecar has established itself as one the most successful models in international motor sports with near-production GT vehicles. Successive class victories in the Le Mans 24 Hours, in the American Le Mans Series (ALMS) or in the FIA-GT series, speak for themselves.
The basis for the vehicles is the production sports car 911 GT3 RS (Type 997). Technical highlights of the 911 GT3 RSR, built according to GT2 regulations, are the 4-litre, 6-cylinder Boxer engine with around 465 bhp, the sequential 6-gear dog-type constant-mesh countershaft transmission, the racing chassis which is constantly being developed and the aerodynamically-optimised and especially light body.
The customer team Flying Lizard Motorsports was particularly successful with the three 911 GT3 RSR cars it entered in 2008. Porsche works drivers Jörg Bergmeister and Wolf Henzler won the driver's championship and Flying Lizard Motorsports the team championship. Johannes van Overbeek and Porsche works driver Patrick Pilet won third place in the driver's competition. Darren Law and Seth Neiman drove the third Flying Lizard 911 GT3 RSR. Dirk Müller, Jörg Hardt, Marc Basseng and others drove the 911 GT3 RSR for the Farnbacher Loles Racing and VICI Racing teams.
