The spare parts range from Porsche Classic is constantly expanding. Nevertheless, it is a long process before a part that may not have been available for many years can be included back in the range. First of all, the original tool must be found. The experts at Porsche Classic do this by identifying the old supplier using the part numbers. The supplier will generally have phased out the tool a number of years previously and placed it in storage. Once found, it must be cleaned, made viable and tested. This is the only way to determine whether it can be used to manufacture parts again. Adapter plates or other extensive adaptations are often needed to be able to use these tools on modern machines. Documents and technical drawings from the Porsche Classic archive help in fine-tuning the adjustments.
Using these original drawings, the experts check whether the materials used in the past are still available or permitted today. If not, they search for an alternative material. This material is subjected to extensive testing if necessary, following consultation with the Development department. Once all of the requirements are met, Porsche Classic starts by having prototypes fabricated that must stand up to comparison with the old part. Next, samples are fitted in the vehicle and all necessary test steps to guarantee full functional integrity are carried out. The order to produce the part is not placed until all of the criteria have been met. The necessary quantity is also defined at this stage. Since these are normally exclusive limited production runs, it is often a big challenge to find a suitable supplier. In order to be able to offer owners of a classic Porsche vehicle the most comprehensive service possible, Porsche Classic therefore also produces parts in very small quantities.
