Porsche in overtaking lane on data highway

Stuttgart. Dr. Ing. h.c. F. Porsche AG, Stuttgart, is embarking on tomorrow’s Internet: the sports car manufacturer is using Internet Protocol Version 6 (IPv6) with immediate effect, thereby laying the foundation for pioneering net access for customers and visitors alike. In addition to accessing already existing web services, in the long-term the introduction of IPv6 ensures new applications and service offerings as well. In this context, we could imagine allocating each vehicle and all safety-related components their own IP addresses, making them uniquely addressable for remote diagnoses.

“In future this will enable the automotive industry to develop innovative safety functions and completely new assistance systems,” said Lutz Meschke, CFO of Porsche AG. “Migrating the entire infrastructure to IPv6 is an essential step in this, with Porsche earning itself the very best starting position.”

Compatibility with the coming standard has been factored into development and procurement in the network arena at the Stuttgart-based sports car manufacturer since 2008. Porsche is the world’s first car manufacturer to have its own IPv6 Internet addresses, thereby putting it on an equal footing with international Internet companies, network companies and web services, which ushered in a new era of Internet addressing with the “World IPv6 Launch Day” today on 6 June 2012. In the second half of 2012, the infrastructure and hardware of Porsche’s worldwide network will be “IPv6 ready” almost without exception.
