Racing legends from the Porsche Museum on the home straight The highlights from the “rolling museum” in the second half of 2013

Stuttgart . The Porsche Museum is noticeably expanding its range of appearances as part of the “rolling museum” this year, which marks the anniversary of the 911. By as early as the first half of the year, the classic Porsche models had been showcased at the most prestigious classic car events around the world. One particular highlight was the 24 Hours of Le Mans race, where the opportunity to celebrate the Stuttgart-based sports car manufacturer's 90th anniversary was not to be missed. The historic brand ambassador’s line-up for 2013 is more dynamic than ever before. The key dates for the second half of the year have already been set:

On August 18, one of the most important automotive events will be taking place – the “Pebble Beach Concours d’ELEGANCE” event, where the Porsche Museum will be showcasing a Porsche 911 GT1, a 911 Carrera Turbo RSR 2.1 and a 935/78 “Moby Dick”, among other models. Another truly special vehicle in the line-up is the Porsche 911 “Follow the 911”, which is travelling the world as part of the “50 years of the Porsche 911” anniversary celebrations. The event in Pebble Beach, California, offers visitors a unique backdrop, in addition to the one-of-a-kind vehicles on display. The world-famous “Pebble Beach Golf Links” golf course, situated directly on California’s steep coast, plays host to the event.

On August 22, the Porsche Museum starts its spell at the “Sachsen Classic” event, which runs until August 25. Among the vehicles taking part in this vintage car rally are a Porsche 911 Carrera 3.2 Speedster, a 911 Carrera 2.7 Coupé and a 911 Carrera RS 2.7. The course runs from Zwickau to Chemnitz (Germany), staging a total of three laps around the Vogtland region.

Another highly exclusive event will be taking place around the Grandhotel Schloss Bensberg from September 6–9. As part of a special exhibition, the Porsche Museum will be presenting a whole host of rally vehicles, including a 911 Carrera 3.2 4x4, a 911 SC Safari, a 911 GT3 Rally and a 959 Paris-Dakar, as well as a Porsche 904 Carrera GTS. In one of the programme highlights, the “Rallye Historique” through the Bergisches Land region, a Porsche 356 Speedster, a 911 2.0 Targa and an earlier 911 Turbo model that will be driven by famous German actors will be among those taking to the starting line.

On September 27, the Rossfeld mountain race in Berchtesgaden begins: an event in which a number of famous racing drivers have taken part since 1958. This year, numerous racing legends in the Porsche Museum team will be returning to the hill climb track, where the total altitude difference is some 700 meters. Among those legends will be Hans Herrmann, who won the mountain race a number of times in the 1960s. This year, Herrmann will be starting the Rossfeld race in a Porsche 718 RS 60. Jürgen Barth, one of the most experienced Porsche racing drivers, will be behind the wheel of a Porsche 718 W-RS Spyder, a car in which his father, Edgar Barth, also competed back in 1964.

From October 10–13, the Targa Florio Classic event in Sicily will be taking place. Gijs van Lennep, Porsche winner of the Le Mans race in 1971, will be taking a very special vehicle to the track – a Porsche 911 Carrera RSR, which the museum has restored to its original condition especially for this race. It was this type of racing vehicle with which van Lennep won the Targa Florio race in 1973, together with Herbert Müller from Switzerland. In addition, Gerard Larousse, winner of the Targa Florio race in 1974, will this year be racing in Italy in a 911 Carrera RS 2.7 from the company's store. The event this year marks an important date in the museum’s racing calendar, as the sports car manufacturer celebrates not only the 50-year anniversary of the 911, but also the anniversary of the last official Targa Florio World Championship race some 40 years ago, where Porsche secured its 11th overall Targa Florio victory.
