Federal Minister Gabriel and Minister-President Tillich to visit Porsche The countdown has begun – newly designed Porsche plant will open on February 11

Stuttgart/Leipzig . The countdown has begun for the opening of the Porsche plant in Leipzig, which has been expanded with 500 million euros: on Tuesday, February 11, the sports-car maker will officially start production of the new Porsche Macan with a ceremonial act. The German Federal Minister of Economic Affairs and Energy, Sigmar Gabriel, the Minister-President of the Free State of Saxony, Stanislaw Tillich, as well as the Lord Mayor of the City of Leipzig, Burkhard Jung, have already accepted invitations to attend. Also participating from Volkswagen Group are the Chairman of the Supervisory Board Dr. Ferdinand K. Piëch, the Chairman of the Board of Management Dr. Martin Winterkorn and the Chairman of the Group Works Council Bernd Osterloh. Porsche AG is represented by the Chairman of the Supervisory Board Dr. Wolfgang Porsche, the Chairman of the General Works Council Uwe Hück as well as all board members and many employee representatives.

In less than two years, Porsche has built out the Leipzig location from what had been up till then an assembly plant into a full-fledged plant with its own body shop and paint shop. In the Saxon plant alone, around 1,500 new jobs were created in the areas of logistics, body manufacturing, painting and assembly for the new sporty Macan SUV. Even more jobs are being created at the plants of numerous suppliers in the surroundings. So the sports-car maker from Stuttgart-Zuffenhausen continues to be a vital driver of economic growth in eastern Germany in 2014.

Matthias Müller, Chairman of Dr. Ing. h.c. F. Porsche AG, says: “Our decision to develop the new Macan in Baden-Württemberg and produce it in Saxony means we have pledged ourselves once again to Germany as an industrial location and to the Porsche quality seal of 'Engineered and made in Germany.'” The company had opened the Leipzig location in 2002 for the market launch of the Cayenne. Matthias Müller: “In addition, the Panamera has been rolling off the assembly line since 2009 – a car as well as the Cayenne that likewise set a new benchmark in its segment. With the Macan, coming next is a super sports car among the SUVs, which has already generated great demand prior to its market launch on April 5.”
