Stuttgart. Stuttgart-based Dr. Ing. h.c. F. Porsche AG currently transports 50 percent of its new vehicles by rail. Jürgen Wels, Head of Logistics at Porsche, marked the occasion of the loading of the 100,000th vehicle by referring to the excellent cooperation with Deutsche Bahn AG: "Our transports run like clockwork. The trains are always punctual and the damage ratio during loading and unloading is minimal. Our decision to use rail transport was absolutely correct, both from an economic as well as from an ecological point of view."
In February 2001, Porsche opened a loading station in Kornwestheim. Since then, all vehicles produced in Zuffenhausen for key markets overseas and in Great Britain (Boxster and 911) have been transported by rail to Emden for shipping by sea. On the return journey, the wagons are loaded with Boxsters from Finland that are destined for customers in Southern Europe. All Cayenne models produced in Leipzig for export overseas are also transported by train to Emden.
According to Dr. Wendelin Wiedeking, President and Chief Executive Officer of Porsche: "This allows us to dispense with 6,000 HGV transports per year, which corresponds to a total road distance of around 3.6 million kilometers." The company will also evaluate all possible ways of further enhancing its cooperation with Deutsche Bahn in the future: "Against the backdrop of continuous increases in freight volumes, the industry is under pressure to transport goods by rail wherever possible," said Wiedeking.
