Porsche organises the Porsche Mobil 1 Supercup for private teams, who generally enter two race cars for the championship. The Porsche 911, the sprint format of the race and the exclusive frame of the F1 weekends make the Supercup an attractive racing series for professionals and rookie drivers. This series is regarded as a launching pad for careers in sports car (ALMS, FIA GT) and touring car racing.
Occasionally Porsche AG can enter its own team with a guest driver in certain events, which is excluded from driver, team and prize money classification. Even international motor sport aces find it extremely difficult to beat the Supercup specialists in the unfamiliar 911. Likewise, automobile and motorbike world champions often find themselves regularly ending up in the unaccustomed mid-field.
Mika Häkkinen, Ralf Schumacher, Thierry Boutsen, Eddie Irvine, Jacques Laffite, and Marc Surer tried their luck against a pack of seasoned Porsche regulars, as did world rally champions Miki Biasion, Stig Blomqvist, Walter Röhrl, Ari Vatanen, Björn Waldegard and Richard Burns.
Representing the motorbike fraction Luca Cadalora, Giacomo Agostini, Ralf Waldmann and Wayne Garner tried the unusual sensation of high speed cornering in a upright position. Thomas Muster and Henri Leconte drove as tennis cracks. From show business, much to the delight of not only motor sport fans, Chris Rea and Tobias Moretti climbed aboard a Supercup Porsche.
