Grand American Sports Car Series

The Grand-Am Road Racing Series was established in 1999 to counteract the downward trend in road racing observed in the 90s. By deliberately restricting the technical development of the vehicles and putting in place a set of strict regulations, the organisers attempted to keep down the deployment costs for the teams. With constant growth of the series and a level playing field, the Grand-Am has become one of the most important sportscar race series in North America over the past 10 seasons. The Grand-Am has been part of the NASCAR organisation, by far the most important race series in North America, since the end of 2008.

The Grand-Am Series is hold with 2 different vehicle categories: Daytona prototypes and GT vehicles. With the exception of the race in Watkins Glen they start together, but are rated separately. The equable starting field are a guarantor for diverse and exciting races. The races are run both on traditional circuits such as Daytona, Montreal or Watkins Glen as well as on modern circuits such as the Miller or Barber Motorsport Park.

The season traditionally starts with the high point - the 24 Hours of Daytona. With its 12 corners, the 5.729 kilometre Daytona International Speedway is one of the most famous race tracks in the USA. The 24 hour race is contested on a combination of the oval with banked corners and the infield. The circuit is also the venue for the famed NASCAR Daytona 500 race with over 250,000 spectators annually.

Most of the races are held over a distance of 250 miles. Exception: 24 Hours of Daytona, Watkins Glen in June (6-hour race), Watkins Glen in August (200 miles) as well as Montreal (200 miles).

Porsche started with an impressive double victory in GT-class at the 49th running of the 24 Hours of Daytona into the new season of 2011. Porsche works driver Wolf Henzler won the strongly-supported GT class with his American teammates Andy Lally, Spencer Pumpelly, Steven Bertheau and Brendan Gaughan at the wheel of TRG Racing’s Porsche 911 GT3 Cup. For Porsche as the most successful manufacturer in the history of this race, this marked the 73rd class win.

Apart from the long-distance race in Florida 11 races are held in the USA and Canada.
