Right in the first year of its release, the Porsche 911 GT3 R impressively proofed it’s competitiveness: In 2010 Porsche factory driver Marco Holzer and his team mate Paul van Splunteren won with this by Prospeed Competition introduced race car immediately the team championship and the driver runner-up.
Also in 2011 several teams are fielding the race car featuring a 480 hp six-cylinder boxer engine.
The series was launched in 2006 as support to the FIA GT Championship, created as a cost-effective series for private teams. Production-based GT vehicles from various manufacturers' one-make series line up on the grid. 2011 the championship starts its sixth season with the same number of events. The champion is determined during six race weekends. Each of them hold two one-hour championship races with one mandatory driver change per race.
Between the season kick-off on May 5th in Portimão, Portugal and the season final at Dutch Circuit Park Zandvoort on October 16th, the GT cars compete in the UK, Spain and France. With a first time racing weekend in Smolensk, Russia, the FIA GT3 European Championship breaks new grounds.
Besides the new racing venues, there is also a change of the sporting regulations for 2011. Instead of placement weights, penalty seconds will now be declared at the pit stop. The penalty seconds are added to the minimum standing time at the pit stop as follows:
1st Position: +15 seconds
2nd Position: +10 seconds
3rd Position: + 5 seconds
Further on, intake air restrictors, weight adjustments and variation of the aerodynamics are intended to balance out any differences between the various vehicles.
