The 41st AvD Oldtimer Grand Prix took place at the Nürburgring from August 9th - 11th 2013. In keeping with tradition, Porsche was in attendance on a 14,000 m² area in the immediate vicinity of the race track. For Porsche it was all about the 911. With an impressive anniversary parade the 50th anniversary of the iconic vehicle was duly celebrated by Porsche Classic.
As in previous years, Porsche Classic displayed its extensive range of Classic genuine parts in a specially arranged marquee. Furthermore the range of services provided by the Porsche Classic workshop regarding restoration, maintenance and repair of classic Porsche vehicles was showcased. Once again this year, the main theme was the Porsche 911.
No other sports car can look back on such a long tradition and consistency. Since its presentation at the Frankfurt IAA Motor Show in 1963, introduced as the 901, more than 820,000 units of the 911 have been built. It stands – now as then – for the perfect symbiosis of sportiness and everyday usability. And each of the seven generations along the way has redefined the 911 concept while retaining its unique character.
The highlight of Porsche Classic’s celebrations of the 911 was the anniversary parade, in which 50 representative vehicles from the early 911 to the special “50 Years of the 911” model did a lap of honour on the Grand Prix track. Holders of a Porsche VIP package were given the opportunity to register for one of the sought-after starting places in this unique parade. Visitors also flocked to enjoy this iconic and impressive fleet up close. For the participating 911 models a special anniversary car park within the 14,000 square metres, occupied by Porsche, was reserved. Additionally, the vehicles have been presented by moderator Walter Zipser one by one on a ramp in front of the Porsche Classic marquee and in order of their year of construction.
There were also some special treasures to be found in the Porsche Classic marquee: the Porsche Museum was represented with two 911 concept cars, a 911 Carrera Speedster from 1987 and the 911 “Aerodynamics World Record” from 1984 which had a cd value of 0.27, sensational for its time, and served as inspiration for the later type 964 of the model series 911. The Porsche Classic workshop showcased the legendary 911 Monte Carlo Rally car from 1965. About a year after the market launch of the 911, the Porsche 911 2.0 experienced a baptism of fire in motor sports in this famous Rally and instantly proved its credentials as a race car when Herbert Linge and Peter Falk took an impressive fifth place. Adverse weather conditions meant that just 22 of the 237 vehicles, which started the race, crossed the finish line that January 1965. Working on the recently started restoration of this extraordinary vehicle is truly a special honour for the specialists from Porsche Classic. Another jewel in the marquee was the Ruby Red Porsche 911 2.0, model year 1964. Porsche Classic kicked off the complete restoration of this vehicle with the live disassembly at the Goodwood Revival 2011 and will finish it by the end of this year.
Porsche Classic experts were on hand to advise and assist visitors by providing information on the extensive availability of genuine parts for Porsche Classic models as well as insider tips on the maintenance and correct servicing of these historic vehicles. Numerous genuine parts and accessories from the Classic range were also on display. Porsche Classic made a clear statement that its commitment to the preservation of classic sports car treasures has never been stronger. At Porsche Centres worldwide, a total of 35,000 genuine parts for classic Porsches are available at any time.
And Porsche had one more highlight to offer at this year’s OGP: to commemorate the record run of racing driver Stefan Bellof in the Porsche 956 30 years ago, his co-driver at the time, Derek Bell, was doing demonstration drives in the original vehicle on the North Loop. While training for the 1,000 kilometre race in a 956 in 1983, Bellof drove what is still the fastest lap ever on the North Loop, in a sensational time of 6:11.13 minutes – an average speed of over 200 km/h (124 mph). Visitors were also able to attend the inauguration of a track section on the time-honoured North Loop: the former “Pflanzgarten 2” was renamed “Stefan Bellof S”.
Derek Bell, as Porsche’s guest of honour, also gave an autograph and interview session on Saturday as well as drawing the tickets for delighted winners of the tombola in the Porsche VIP hospitality marquee that evening. Once again this year, seats in the Porsche VIP Hospitality area were sold out in a flash. With its own grandstand on the race track – for the 1,000 guests from all over Europe who travelled to the event with some 500 Porsche vehicles of all types-- they were highly coveted.
Porsche Exclusive & Tequipment was also in attendance with its own display marquee. Customer advisors from Porsche Exclusive & Tequipment provided information on the numerous personalisation options available direct from the factory, and the accessory products for the subsequent enhancement and care of Porsche vehicles. Porsche’s presence was rounded off by the Porsche Community Management, which looks after Porsche clubs worldwide, Porsche Deutschland and also the event truck of Porsche Driver’s Selection by Porsche Design, with a large selection of current Porsche accessories.
