The Fuchs rim was once as synonymous with the 911 as the air-cooled rear engine. With a timeless sporty attraction, it remains a coveted cult icon to this very day – and in the middle of the 60s was the first forged alloy wheel used by Porsche for a standard production vehicle. Although not available for many years, production was resumed in 2007 and has been continuously expanded since then. This has enabled supply gaps to be more or less closed. Porsche Classic currently has the 15-inch rim in 6, 7, 8 and 9 inch widths in its range. The 9x15-inch rim in particular, once used mainly in motor sports, is highly coveted.
The 16-inch rim is also available in 7, 8 and 9 inch widths.
This wheel has enjoyed growing popularity for more than four decades because of its history, which is inextricably linked with the origins of the Porsche 911.
When the engineers started development of the Porsche 911 in the 60s, they wanted a special wheel. As well as excellent characteristics, it also had to break the mould when it came to looks. And it had to be made from an alloy. That’s why Porsche turned to the renowned company Otto Fuchs KG in Meinerzhagen. And so the Fuchs rim was born, a rim that adorned every 911 until 1989 and to this day is manufactured in a complex, special casting process. The wheel, with a design that still appeals to this day, is produced from sections cut from a six-metre cast block using presses capable of applying a force of up to 7,000 tonnes.
Incidentally, Otto Fuchs KG is still a reliable Porsche supplier of exceptional rims for current standard production models. But Porsche fans will always associate the Fuchs name with the legendary windmill wheel of the 911.
