The 40th AvD-Oldtimer-Grand-Prix took place on the Nuerburgring from August 10 to 12, and the attention of Porsche Classic was once again focused on the legendary 911 Carrera RS. As in past years, the department responsible for supporting all vintage Porsche cars and recent classics at the Dr. Ing.h.c. F. Porsche AG found itself on a total area of 16,000 square meters in the immediate vicinity of the race track and exhibited an extensive range of services in the areas of repair, maintenance, care, restoration and the supply of genuine parts for classic Porsche Sports Cars.
However, it was not only the AvD-Oltimer-Grand-Prix which celebrated its 40th anniversary in 2012; the legendary 'duck tail' 911 had reason to celebrate as well. Produced from October 1972 to July 1973, the high-performance Sports Car was initially only intended as a motor sports homologation series of 500 units, but customer demand was so high that 1,580 Carrera RS units were eventually built. Porsche built 55 Carrera RSR cars intended purely for racing, which not only started the dawn of a new era in Porsche customer racing, but also caused a sensation at the Nuerburgring.
The former Porsche works driver, Gijs van Lennep, witnessed it first-hand. Together with Herbert Müller he drove the 911 Carrera RSR 1973, which ran like clockwork, during the 1,000 km race at the Nuerburgring, finishing in fifth place overall. Unforgettable is also his victory at the Targa Florio with the RSR in 1973 as well as the two overall wins in Le Mans: 1971 with Helmut Marko in the Porsche 917K and 1976 in the Porsche 936 with Jacky Ickx. Together with two-time rally world champion Walter Roehrl, van Lennep attended the AvD-Oldtimer- Grand-Prix 2012 as the Porsche guest of honour and was present at the Porsche Classic stand on Saturday to sign autographs and give interviews. Gijs van Lennep also drew the winners of the evening raffle in the Porsche VIP-Hospitality.
In addition to Porsche Classic, the Porsche Museum and Porsche Exclusive & Tequipment were also present at this year's OGP. The Porsche Design Driver’s Selection truck offered a selection from the current collection, and the ever-popular Porsche Hospitality area had its own grandstand on the race circuit for the 1,000 guests from all over Europe, who arrived at the event with more than 500 Porsche vehicles.
