The 38th AvD-Oldtimer-Grand-Prix, one of the most important international motor racing events for historic cars, took place at the Nürburgring from 13 to 15 August 2010. It featured 650 racing cars from seven decades of motor racing history, showcased to around 60,000 enthusiastic visitors.
Porsche was represented by Porsche Classic, Porsche Exclusive & Tequipment and Porsche Driver's Selection on a total area of 14,000 square metres, in close proximity to the race track. The Porsche Museum also had a stand on site for the first time. Together with selected partners Bose, Kingeter, Mahle and Mobil, Porsche Classic provided visitors with a wide diversity of information and entertainment in the spacious Porsche exhibition area.
With the popular crane ride, which had been provided by forwarding agent Hendricks exclusively for around 750 Porsche VIP package owners, the guests were able to enjoy a spectacular view over the Nürburgring. From this lofty height, they were afforded the best view of the more than 400 Porsche customer vehicles which were arranged according to generations around the Porsche exhibition tent – yet another highlight for the owners of a Porsche VIP package.
In the Porsche exhibition tent Porsche Classic focussed on the theme of the body. In this context, the process of cathodic dip painting was particularly emphasised. A Porsche 911 body (1970 model) which had deteriorated into a deplorable state over the years as well as the newly painted body of a Porsche 911 SC RS (1983 model) illustrated the spectacular transformation. This process was presented using a miniature model of the cathodic dip painting bath, which earned an enthusiastic response from visitors and was very popular throughout the entire event.
A further highlight of this year’s event was the spectacular exhibition of the 917 KH, 962 C and the GT1 museum vehicles. These Le Mans winning vehicles were on display to mark the 40th anniversary of the first Porsche overall victory in Le Mans, the central Porsche Classic event motto for this year. But that was not all – the drivers of these vehicles, Hans Herrmann and Derek Bell, were also on hand to give autographs and interviews. Moderated by Eve Scheer, who succeeded in drawing out interesting stories from the racing drivers about their racing careers, these parts of the program were a huge hit with both fans and motorsports enthusiasts.
The exclusive hospitality area with its own grandstand on the famous Hatzenbach bend rounded off the event offering from Porsche Classic. Here, Porsche VIP package owners enjoyed both culinary and cultural treats throughout the weekend. Entertainment on Saturday took the form of the spectacular evening event. The high points of the evening were the tombola and its attractive prices, such as for example the Bose Wave Sound System, and the interviews with racing legends, Hans Herrmann and Derek Bell, who spoke about their passion for Porsche.
Overall, the AvD-Oldtimer-Grand-Prix and the imposing presence of Porsche Classic enjoyed great resonance with visitors, while the excellent weather on the first two days of the event certainly contributed hugely to the great atmosphere. In anticipation of August 2011, preparations have already started for the 39th staging on the Nürburgring of this highlight of the racing calendar.
