A Saxon success story“10 years of Porsche Leipzig”: anniversary concert in the Leipzig Gewandhaus

Stuttgart/Leipzig. Production up twofold, employee numbers up threefold, increase in vehicle output by orders of magnitude: since production began in 2002, Porsche Leipzig has developed into one of the most successful automotive factories. To mark the plant’s tenth anniversary, the Leipzig Gewandhaus Orchestra will tomorrow be performing a concert for violin and orchestra by Dimitri Shostakovich as well as the Third Symphony by Johannes Brahms conducted by Riccardo Chailly.

“Ten years ago, nobody could have guessed at the success story of our Leipzig plant. Today, some 500 Cayennes and Panameras bound for more than 110 countries leave the production halls daily. Our success is international, but our home is Leipzig. Saxony has become the Swabian company’s home from home and we still have a lot more plans in store for the location,” said the President and Chief Executive Officer of Dr. Ing. h.c. F. Porsche AG, Matthias Müller. The end of 2013 will see the start of production of the Macan, a completely new model range. To that end, Porsche is developing the Leipzig production site into a fully fledged plant with body shop and paint shop, is investing approximately 500 million euro and creating more than 1,000 new jobs. “This is a big display of confidence in the Porsche team in Leipzig,” Müller continued.

The decision taken back then to locate production in Leipzig had clearly proved to be a success, Siegfried Bülow, Chairman of the Executive Board of Porsche Leipzig GmbH, added. “Here on a greenfield site in the north of the city we had always had the ability to expand and create additional production facilities. Moreover, in Saxony, home of the car, we benefit from highly qualified skilled workers and suppliers. We owe the region a debt of gratitude and as such want to take our social responsibility even more seriously,” said Bülow. In addition to numerous charitable projects, Porsche has been supporting the Leipzig Gewandhaus Orchestra since 2011. It was this partnership that gave rise to the idea of celebrating the production anniversary with a Great Concert together with the people of Leipzig and a galaxy of prominent guests from the worlds of politics and business.

And there is another reason for celebration: the end of June will see the 500,000th Porsche ‘made in Leipzig’ roll off the production line.
