Porsche announces its decision to produce a sports utility vehicle (SUV).
September 17, 1999:
The decision to produce the sports utility vehicle at the new plant in Leipzig is announced. Porsche intends to invest around €50 million Euro and create 260 new jobs.
February 7, 2000:
Ground breaking for the plant. The first employees are employed in Sachsen.
June 8, 2000:
The third model series after Porsche 911 and Boxster is named the Cayenne.
Construction of the customer center and test track begins.
October 19, 2001:
The topping out ceremony for the new plant is celebrated.
July 4, 2002:
The Porsche Board of Directors decides to produce the Carrera GT high-performance sports car in Leipzig.
August 20, 2002:
Construction of the Leipzig plant is complete. Porsche first presents the Cayenne at the opening inauguration ceremony. The Company has invested €127 million Euro in the plant and created 300 new jobs.
Customers collect the first Cayenne vehicles at the plant.
Production begins on the Carrera GT high-performance sports car.
Employees produce the 100,000th Cayenne.
May 6, 2006:
Production of the Carrera GT ends after 1270 vehicles are built.
May 19, 2006:
The Porsche Board of Directors announces that the Gran Turismo "Panamera" will be built in Leipzig.
Porsche begins conversion of the plant for production of thePanamera.
Employees produce the 150,000th Cayenne.
With the 150,371st Cayenne, production of the first generation of this model series ends. At the same time, production of the second generation begins.
April 12, 2007:
The topping out ceremony for the Panamera production facilities and the logistics center is celebrated. An investment of €150 million Euro was required for conversion of the plant.
