Daniel Gaunt has taken a clean sweep of race wins at Porsche Carrera Cup Australia’s Townsville round, while Damien Flack secured Elite Class victory and Jonny Reid gained the series lead.
After winning Saturday’s Race 1, Gaunt was again unstoppable in Sunday morning’s Race 2, where the New Zealander pulled away from the field after an early battle with Craig Baird.
Reid moved in to second and closed the gap to Gaunt late in the race but was unable to challenge for the lead. Gaunt therefore went on to win ahead of Reid, Baird, Michael Patrizi, Ben Barker, leading Elite Class duo Damien Flack and Max Twigg and Steven Richards, who was left to charge back through the field after being contacted, and subsequently spun, on the opening lap.
Gaunt’s Race 3 dominance mirrored that of his previous race, gapping his rivals and taking a comprehensive race and round win only days after being recruited by Money Choice Motorsport.
“The weekend went perfectly. We had only just picked up Money Choice as a sponsor and scored three race wins, so it rewards them for taking a punt on me,” said Gaunt.
“You always think it’s possible to go out and win all three races. I know when things are going my way I’m one of the drivers to beat, as are the top half-a-dozen guys.
“My goal hasn’t changed since Perth: Try to win some races, get back in the hunt for the championship and, with a couple of rounds to go, reassess it all again. I’ll just try to keep winning races.”
Reid again chased his countryman Gaunt in Race 3 but was unable to challenge Gaunt by the finish. Reid finished second, beating Patrizi, Baird, Richards, Barker, Flack, Matthew Coleman, Mark Noske and Twigg in 10th.
Reid therefore claimed second outright for the round ahead of Patrizi, Baird, Barker, Richards and Flack.
Flack also became the third Elite Class winner in as many rounds for the Carrera Cup season, and was pleased with the victory after finishing the round ahead of Max Twigg and Theo Koundouris.
“I’m absolutely ecstatic. That last race was exactly what I was hoping for,” said Flack.
“I stuffed the start of Race 3 but got back passed a few cars and then managed to pull in the professional drivers to be within six seconds. To be able to do that and be lapping a little bit quicker than the top five was awesome.
“Phillip Island will be an interesting round because it’s Twigg’s home track, the Koundouris brothers always do well there and all the top Elite guys have strong history there. Hopefully we can find a good set-up and we can take it up to them.”
Reid’s consistent form at Townsville saw him promoted to the championship lead, trailed by Baird, Gaunt, Richards and Patrizi.
Guest driver Mark Noske, driving the Bid4Jase.com car, improved on Saturday’s result. After a DNF in Race 1, the former V8 Supercar driver claimed 12th and 9th at the Queensland street circuit.
