Former champion and administrator Carrera Cup boundMartin Wagg to compete in the Porsche Carrera Cup Australia championship

Former Porsche champion and past Australian GT Championship owner Martin Wagg will compete in the Porsche Carrera Cup Australia championship for the remainder of 2013.

After a nine-year racing sabbatical, Wagg purchased the Hunter Motor Sports Porsche 911 race car and will make his debut in the sports car championship in Townsville on July 05-07.

No stranger to Porsche competition, Wagg was crowned the 2001 champion of the one-make precursor to the Carrera Cup category, Porsche Cup.

Wagg will now return to the driver’s seat of a Porsche having last raced in the iconic German marque on the streets of Surfers Paradise in 2003 as part of the Nations Cup series.

Wagg has since owned the Australian GT Championship before ultimately choosing to return to sport car racing in the Carrera Cup championship.

“It will be great to jump back in a Porsche again, which is where I spent most of my racing years,” said Wagg, who recently tested at Winton Motor Raceway in preparation for the coming North Queensland event.
“We leased Rusty French’s car that Dan Gaunt drove last season for the test day. I enjoyed it so much that I decided I would buy one. We took delivery of the Hunter Motor Sports car this week that was driven by Jonny Reid to much success last season.

“Even though it was wet at our test day, I felt very much at home in the car. While it has been 10 years since I last raced a Porsche, that distinctive Porsche feel is still there; this one just does everything faster.

“I am really looking forward to Townsville. I will see how I go and, most importantly, make sure we have some fun. Pending how the rest of this year goes I may look to buying one of the new cars for 2014.”

Wagg will compete with Melbourne-based team Eggleston Motorsport for the remaining four rounds of the 2013 Porsche Carrera Cup Australia season, beginning in seven days at the Sucrogen Townsville 400 on July 05-07, 2013, at Reid Park, Townsville.
