Carrera Cup Asia champion to shake up Sydney finaleAsian champion Alexandre Imperatori makes Guest appearance in Carrera Cup Australia

Australia’s top Porsche drivers will have an added challenge at Sydney Olympic Park this weekend with the arrival of 2012 Porsche Carrera Cup Asia champion Alexandre Imperatori with the backing of TYREPLUS.

The 25-year-old Swiss driver will compete in the final round of Porsche City Index Carrera Cup Australia having dominated the Asian sister series in 2012 with seven wins from the season’s 11 races.

The China-based Imperatori will now line up at the Sydney Olympic Park circuit with sponsorship from TYREPLUS – the retail partner of the championship’s Official Tyre Partner, Michelin – and is set to challenge the championship’s front-running racers.

“I’m very much looking forward to this weekend. It looks like a fantastic, challenging street circuit and I know Craig Baird and some of the drivers from different categories I’ve raced in the past, so I expect the competition to be very strong,” said Imperatori.

“It’s my first time here, I don’t know the track and it was a last-minute deal so I don’t really know what to expect, to be honest. I’ll just try to enjoy the weekend and we’ll see tomorrow whether we can be competitive from the get-go.

Imperatori’s entry in the final round of the Carrera Cup Australia season was crafted on Wednesday after it became known to Porsche Cars Australia that the Swiss Porsche ace would be in Sydney at the time of the Sydney Telstra 500 event.

“I was in Sydney to visit my wife and to have a bit of a holiday and relax after my season was over in Asia. I was clearing customs in Melbourne yesterday when I got a call from Porsche asking whether I wanted to race this weekend. I did want to race and I’m really grateful to Porsche Cars Australia for making it happen. I’d also like to thank my team in China, Team StarChase, for letting me race and to Michelin and TYREPLUS for supporting us throughout the weekend.”

No stranger to street circuits, two weeks ago Imperatori finished second at the Macau GT Cup – the prestigious and ultra-competitive sports car race around the revered Macau street circuit aboard a Porsche 911 GT3-R.

The Sydney round will mark the second appearance of the TYREPLUS Porsche in the 2012 Carrera Cup Australia season after it was driven by dual Porsche Supercup champion Jeroen Bleekemolen at Bathurst in October.
